I'm currently going through nukemarine's Core Beginner deck and was wondering whether anyone already had a deck with the definition of the words in the sentences defined in a field (not just the one vocabulary word). I'd prefer a deck sorted according to Cangy's algorithm.

Isn't the deck already sorted by Cangy's algorithm? I thought that was the point of the deck.

Yeah, it is. But I'm looking for a deck with all the words defined - nuke's deck only has the vocabulary word (and the sentence) it's testing on the card in the definition.

There's no deck in which every word is defined. The decks are based on the original SmartFM flashcards, which only give definitions for certain words in each sentence. It would be tedious to define every single word in each and every sentence. Not to mention, resources would be better invested elsewhere since it's pointless to define words that are repeated over and over again. Even defining each unique word once would be a hassle. There's not too many sentences where there's more than one or two unique words. Therefore, I don't see any pressing need for additional definitions to be added to core decks.

Fill them in as you go, and make that your own personal contribution...But in general I agree with Villeru, as you work through Core2k, you quickly realize the bulk of the words in the sentences are used over and over again, and they become easy enough to remember. Especially once your "grammatical" understanding becomes good enough to recognize the structural role each word plays in the sentence. So, after doing a couple hundred words, you will soon find it would really be pretty wasteful to define words one-by-one on each card. While you run Anki, just keep a browser open and pointed to a j-dictionary so you can look up anything that pops out at you as new/unusual. That's my suggestion, anyways.

If you think about it, the English translations ARE the definitions. It's just assumed by knowing the English word, you know what the definition will be. It'd be kind of silly for a deck trying to teach Japanese to have a field for Car or 車 "auto mechanical four wheeled vehicle device used for primarily for the transportation of small groups of people" or "軸に貫いて回転する仕組みの輪。車輪。" If you know either Car or 車 then you know the other, just not how to say it yet.

Now, it's not the perfect system, but for adults with a strong grasp in L1, it makes sense early on to use L1 to help you learn the basics of L2 fast.

PS: The Tanuki deck has small Japanese definitions for all of its entries.

Just use (BROKEN LINK) Stardict (offline Rikaichan that works anywhere) and look up the words while in Anki. Or I bet eventually we can work something out with ThomasB's parser or Mecapi or something, re: Anki plugins...

Edit: Oh and duh, forgot to mention there's the Translation Aggregator thingy that can auto-copy what's in your clipboard and send it to multiple translator services, Mecab, and JParser. The only downside, hopefully temporary, is you can't copy what JParser shows you, though otherwise it's great. I haven't seen how it uses Mecab, because I can't get Mecab to work offline.

the original import file has such a field, and a choice of sort orders -- you can just import it into a new deck yourself

Obviously I don't need definitions for words in 漢字. I guess I'll just look up the others though (I'd simply figured someone would have added definitions - at least to some of the words - on their own).

On an unrelated note, cram mode/learn mode doesn't seem to work with this deck. Tried removing images (thought that could be the source of the problem)/sounds (from the model), yet it still doesn't work. Running Anki on Mac OS X.
