I'd like to read more news...but I would like more pictures than I've typically found on Japanese newspaper sites...on NHK I like to watch kodomo news which summarizes the weeks news for kids...has anyone found an equivalent source on the net?

Here's a list of online news sites for kids. For most news, I like http://www.asagaku.com (lots of pictures) and http://news.kids.yahoo.co.jp.

I remembered seeing this on the app store, so I just tried it out. It's certainly easier to read than articles, but still with lots of kanji and useful vocabulary.

I got the Sky News app yesterday, and I thought it was good that you could stream videos and read articles of the same stories. There doesn't seem to be a Japanese app with the same feature, which is disappointing.
