Wow, so I just discovered Rikaisama and installed it. Being kind of a newb to a lot of this stuff, I had never heard of EPWING before. Please humor me because I got really confused in trying to figure this out via net searching.
Is it possible to download/buy any of the EPWING dictionaries in such a way that I can use them with Rikaisama on a mac?

I'd love the 4 shown in the EPWING screen capture for Rikaisama. Out of luck?

EPWING files are dictionary files which can be used with any device as long as it has EPWING reader software for it (or Rikaisama XD). You might want to check the post I did on it here for...um, "advice" on where they might be found, and the RevTK Wiki for EPWING reader links.

Rikaisama's EPWING feature doesn't work on Mac. Asriel did release a Mac version for a previous version of Rikaisama.

Not sure if it was caused by one of the latest updates, but some of the save format tokens seems to be acting strange now.
$d occasionally returns the highlighted term instead of the dictionary form (just like $h) and the filename returned by $a presents the same problem (the audio file is actually saved correctly as hiragana - kanji.mp3).
This seems to always happen with words that are in hiragana in the original text and have a dictionary entry that uses kanji. Not sure if it happens in other cases as well.

So if I highlight the term ひつよう and save I get:
$d = ひつよう (should be 必要)
$a = ひつよう - ひつよう.mp3 (should be ひつよう - 必要.mp3)
and the audio file is saved as ひつよう - 必要.mp3 (and anki won't find it)

if I highlight the term ヒツヨウ and save, it works correctly as I get:
$d = 必要
$a = ひつよう - 必要.mp3
and the audio file is saved as ひつよう - 必要.mp3

Checking some cards I made around July it seems that this problem was not present, but I'm not sure which version I was running at the time. Currently I'm running the latest version of rikaisama on ff9.

As always, thanks for your wonderful work, rikaisama and the other tools you shared with the community make it so much easier to study Japanese that it almost feels like cheating

I thought I should let you know I've just changed operating systems, so you don't need to worry about fixing my problem in a hurry. Hopefully it will work no problem on Lubuntu.

I think I probably already said it, but thanks to everyone who contributed to this.

Edit: just finished setting it up and it works perfectly. Definitely worth switching computers for. XD

@cb: How can I save both the meaning from f.e. the German/English dictionary into the 'Meaning' field and the definition given from another EPWING dictionary at the same time?! Did I miss something or do I use a version that's too old? :D

I thought I read somewhere in this thread that someone got the Rikaisama EPWING support to work on a mac. I still have Rikaisama installed (just cause I like to pretend it'll work), and pointed the plugin towards my EPWING dictionaries, but to no avail (the path is just to the folder each one is in though- that works on EBMac).

i bear no responsibility if stuff goes awry... you should definitely backup your 2 dylib files before copy/pasting, if they exist. during installation on a third mac the new libiconv.2.dylib file stopped filemaker pro from working. i reinstalled the original dylib file and both filemaker and epwing support worked thereafter. you've been warned...

you also probably need the compatability reporter thing from Nestor's post...

Thank you so much! One hiccup when I was opening the .xpi file with Firefox- I got a "this plugin is not compatible with Firefox 9.0.1" error- not surprising if it's an older version of rikaisama. Any workarounds?"*

For all the people who can't get Anki import working on Mac.
Go to the Rikaisama plugin folder and find run_udp.sh in the udp folder.
Open it and replace it with
#!/bin/bash
python "$1" $2 $3

All I changed was to put the $1 in quotes because the path to the python file had a space in it (.../Application Support/...). Now it works fine. Thanks for the great plugin!

Excellent! My EPWING Sanseido works beautifully now on the Mac... but my Kôjien doesn't. It always says "Entry not found."

I suspect my problem is that I have a Kôjien edition with a Chûjiten thrown in. Both originally came on a mini-CD for my good old Sony electronic dictionary, but there's only one CATALOG file on the CD ... so when copied to my HD, the paths look like this:

is there a way to create cards from multiple dictionaries at once? for example, could I save the sanseido's Japanese definitions with rikaichan's English definitions in Anki's real-time importer at the same time?

● In addition to the normal "S" save key, Rikaisama now adds the "X" save key that allows you to save the kana version of the highlighted word (essentially, the $d token is replaced with the $r token). Useful for words where the kana form is preferred over the kanji form.

I installed mac rikaisama, but didn`t quite understand how to get epwing option to work.
If I don`t have the usr/local/lib/ folder on my machine do I need to create it? And if so, how can I do that?

You do have that folder, but if you're running Lion, you'll need to know this:

I am on Snow Leopard. I do have /usr/lib/ folder, but I don`t have /usr/local/lib/ folder. There`s no /usr/local/ directory at all on my mac.
Now in the /usr/lib/ folder there is a file named libiconv.2.dylib, but since the folder name is different, I am not sure if I should go ahead and try to change it with the file that came within mac rikaisama pack.

It took me a while to figure out what was wrong with my EPWING dictionaries and it turns out it was the Japanese characters in the path name... It would be nice if Rikaisama would just say "Hey dummy, I can't find the dictionary."

Anyway, this looks great, are there any future plans to somehow allow for recursive lookups within a dictionary definition? I guess I can use the "save to file" feature for something similar for now. (Actually, I guess this works just fine.)

Is there any way to have it for the English dictionary to default to "hide definition" and "not-hide" for Sanseido mode? It's very annoying to toggle these when I just want the quick reading lookups on the English dictionary but don't want the English definitions.

Also, if dictionary hasn't changed, it would be nice if it could temporarily buffer the last X number of dictionary lookups. This would be especially useful for Sanseido mode, so if you mouse over something then re-mouse over it, it doesn't have to hit the slow server each time. This would also would help with EPWING, since they aren't exactly the fastest lookups either.
