Japanese Bands

Who are your favourites? I myself love ミスチル(Mr Children) and 東京 (Tokyo Jihen)

Also, anyone got any recommendations for indie rock-pop J-bands?

I like Supercar スーパーカー。

They have some really weird videos too.

Also there are a few threads on Japanese music. Just do a search and you will get lots of recommendations.

I love Supercar as well, especially (at risk of speaking Hipsterese) their earlier more rock oriented albums, particularly "Three Out Change!!". Kouji Nakamura's project iLL is somewhat similar to Supercar's later, more electronic stuff and is totally worth checking out, too. Can't say I'm a fan of Miki Furukawa or her solo stuff, though.

I could go on about music for hours, so I'll spare everyone and instead NAMEDROP LIKE IT'S HOT.

Luminous Orange
101A
毘盧遮那
Boris
Church of Misery
Coaltar of the Deepers
CONDOR44
Cosmicdust
Cruyff in the Bedroom
Envy
Flipper's Guitar
Fox Loco Phantom (one of my newer favorites/obsessions, so damn good)
五人一首
Guitar Vader (pretty much the greatest music video ever made)
Hartfield
Heaven in Her Arms
Honeydip
Maikotobranco
Mono (greatest instrumental rock band ever)
Monocism
Ogre You A$$hole
Pasteboard
Polaris (no, not the Pete & Pete one)
Presence of Soul
Rovo (instrumental, but absolutely mindblowing - any band with an electric violin is okay in my book)
Sigh (experimental era, rather than grim black metvl)
(song titles so long, they're almost fit for SRS sentences)
Texas Pandaa

Wow, didn't know there were any other Supercar lovers in here. Awesome!! They were probably the first Japanese band I started listening too, and it was before I was even studying Japanese. Always been my favorite band since then too Smile

Wow, thanks for that link! I knew Kouji Nakamura had gone on solo after they disbanded but never found out where he ended up. Love the sound of that song (it is very reminiscent of their later music, which is my favorite anyway XD)

I also knew Miki Furukawa had gone on solo but I remember seeing one of her vids randomly on YouTube and kinda just listened to it without it sticking in my mind. I really loved her vocal touch in some of Supercar's songs though.

As for my recent favorite band, I've been loving サカナクション(Sakanaction).
Very similar to Supercar's later music, electro-rock fusion sort of. They also seem to be going more electro nowadays too, which I do love!! I really think Ichiro Yamaguchi's vocal talent has improved greatly from their first album when comparing it to their most recent album. Very similar to Supercar, where I also think Kouji Nakamura's vocals matured a lot from their earlier music to their final albums.

Some of Sakanaction's stuff:

-older song, 2nd album

-3rd album, electro type stuff

-newest album from last month, and my favorite album!

A day's no good if I don't listen to Bump of Chicken. I liked them before I understood Japanese, but now that I can get the lyrics they're my favorite band.

I also love JAM Project for over-the-top blood-pumping heroic music.

Yeah, they have pretty sweet lyrics.

Sometimes the music itself falls short, though...

They're like if Bob Dylan did J Rock, but better.

I have literally cried listening to their songs.

I've recently gotten into MEGARYU, Radwimps, かりゆし58、 スチャダラパー、 and ケツメシ. I guess they aren´t all in the requested genre, though..

I second the suggestion of Luminous Orange. The album Drop You Vivid Colors can easily stand with the best of early 90s shoegaze.

Furukawa Miki's second album is totally worth checking out, it's a lot less poppy than her other two and sounds like her early Supercar songs. It also has some electric violin in it...

Stuff I listen to that has been mentioned in this thread:
Supercar
CONDOR44 (Their last album is SO, SO GOOD)
Fox loco phantom (that's from your earlier post though)
Hartfield
Mono
Ogre You leprechaun

Texas Pandaa
Sakanaction
Rin Toshite Shigure (don't like the vocals, but the musical aspect of it is okay)
Straighteners

My own personal recommendation would be:

andymori:

- Vocalist sounds a bit like Vampire Weekend's vocalist, and some of their music is similar to them, but somehow some of the music is similar to the Libertines at times.

LITE:

- Math-rock/instrumental kind of thing

Spangle Call Lilli Line:

- Maybe post-rock, with a really good female vocalist

toe:

- Maybe post-rock with a bit of a math-rock

World's End Girlfriend:

- The Air Doll (空気人形) OST is full of really relaxing songs, but sometimes if you're into experimental:

Miaou:

- More post-rock, maybe with a little bit of experimental and electronic.

チリヌルヲワカ:

- Spin-off band or something from GO!GO!7188's vocalist. I don't listen to gogo much but the album is pretty good.

ACIDMAN:

- pretty good too. Straight out alt/rock, maybe.

There's also a band whose music I can't find anywhere over the interwebs. They sound somewhat folkish but rockish at the same time. Similar to The Beatles, maybe?

おとぎ話:

http://www.myspace.com/otgbanashi

Anyone has links? I'm considering buying their CDs now though.

Third (?) Bump of Chicken.

I've been on an Orange Range kick.

There have been very few lyricists as good as Bob Dylan, and Bump of Chicken aren't in the same ballpark. His music is better too.

Found Mari Hamada (浜田麻里) recently, not a band but it's not worth making a new thread, and I'm already addicted to two of her songs:
Heartbeat Away From You Great vibrato!
Lights

She sings in different genres too, but I'm not a fan of.
