pitch accent in koujien?

#1
I was hoping to add a dictionary that includes pitch accent mark-up to my trusty Casio XD-GP9700. Unfortunately, the electronic version of the kenkyusha green goddess doesn't show the accents, and Casio don't seem to offer the NHK dictionary as an add-on, even though it is included in most of the newer models. Grrrrr.

I could buy the koujien as an addon (XS-IW01A), but does the electronic version include accent marks? If so, I'd be grateful if someone could post a screenshot or two...

No version of kojien that I've ever seen includes accent marks (most dictionaries do not have them actually). My denshi-jisho includes koujien by default and it doesn't have marks, nor does the other included monodict (明鏡).

大辞林 on my iPhone does include accent numbers though. The green goddess I use on my computer (EPWING) also includes accent numbers.

I don't think accent marks are included. Newer Casios with the Koujien do include 70,000 sound files, but whether they are also present in the add-on version I don't know.

Hmm...that's odd - I'd seen a couple of reviews mentioning the accent marking in 25% of words in koujien in a couple of reviews for denshi-jisho that include it:

http://smartimports.net/product.php?prod...252&page=1

"...the Kojien also includes accents for 60,000 words, and the Meikyo has Japanese audio for 47,000 words!"

http://quinlanfaris.com/?p=150

"... 60,000 words with accenting in the Kojien Dictionary"

Can anyone confirm or deny??

There's definately no Accents in my Koujien (Ex-Word XD-SF6300). Buying the Daijirin is probably the better option as it is a pretty neat dictionary in itself. Maybe it's just me, but I find Daijirin a lot easier to use than Koujien.

I think the reviewers (linked to above) misread the specs and didn't try out the actual device. I've played around a fair bit with many models including this one and have yet to see an accent mark in the Koujien.

Incidentally the recorded sounds are provided by Casio, not the dictionary makers, so individual words have the same voice recording for each dictionary. 70,000 seems to refer to the total number of recordings, of which the NHK book covers 69,000 and the Koujien 60,000.

Thanks for all the info, guys.

@Jarvik: which edition of the green goddess in EPWING format do you have that shows the accents - 4th or 5th?

I was mistaken, my gg doesn't have pitch marks.

Thanks, Jarvik.

I've just bought a (very cheap) copy of the old 4th edition in EPWING format on Amazon, and that does have the accent marks, using the same corner-bracket notation as the printed version, e.g.

ha┏shi┓
はし 橋
n. a bridge; a footbridge (歩道橋);

ha┓shi
はし 箸
n. 《a pair of》 chopsticks.

I still have my trusty 5th edition on my Casio denshi-jisho, so I'm sorted! Smile
