I'm bored at work, so I thought I'd share with you all this (fun?) game/time waster I used to play with my fellow Japanese classmates in other lectures. I think it's an improvement on the pointless word-association threads I've seen on other forums, although it is perhaps equally pointless. The game is simple:
1) Add one character to the board to make a new compound (reading only from left to right or top to bottom).
2) Adding one or two characters to make a three character compound is also good, and will help a lot to open up the board!
3) It's perfectly okay to have several characters in a row which only make words in pairs - for example: 球団結果物 could appear after 4 turns. However, two characters appearing next to each other must always make a word (possibly with other characters in line with them). For example, the following is not legal because 一三 is not a word:
一三
年月
4) Anyone can jump in at any time, just try not to take 2 turns in a row!
5) Don't repeat compounds already on the board.
6) If you somehow contrive to make it impossible to play on the board...you lose!
Just copy and paste the current board into your post and then add your entry. Keep your entries in a code field so that it all lines up properly, and use ー instead of spaces, since the spaces don't seem to be quite the same width as the characters.
じゃあ、簡単の言葉で始まりましょう。よろしくお願いします!
Other variants I've played include chaining the readings instead of the kanji, or playing with just hiragana/katakana using the last syllable of a word to start the next. Don't use any words ending in ん for this last one...
Edit: added prohibition to rule 3

This isn't as pretty, but it works!
