Just an FYI to the uninitiated, I currently am running the Nexus One with a full Japanese GUI. Its pretty sweet. Great at adding more to the immersion. I renamed all my common friends to their japanese names, and have full chinese/japanese send receive sms support right here in canada. Plus there are a ton of Japanese apps in the marketplace.
Plus as far as I know the Nex One will work in japan with Docomo and Softbank, so its an added plus.

Sounds great!
How is the input method? Is there a draw kanji-kana feature?

I use two different input methods. Winnflick which you use your finger swipes to type. Kind of like you hold た and it gives you the option of ち is slide up, つ slide right てslide down etc.. its really fast and easy
The other one is Simji, which allows bluetooth keyboard to type English or japanese. Works like a charm.
I dont really write the kanji by hand as its faster to use these methods. If you really want to practice kanji input Ankidroid has a nice whiteboard feature so you can write the kanji your learning on the screen with your finger.

Do you know if this is Android 2.0+ only, or only for phones bought in Japan, or something like that? My G1 only has English and Spanish locales available.

I too have a Nexus One and I just noticed that the built-in Japanese font displays at least one Kanji quite differently. The word was 誤解。 But 誤 was written in a different way. 言 + 吴 instead of 呉. Evidently 吴 is a variant of 呉 but I do wonder why the Nexus One uses this variant.

Anki and WWWJDIC work beautifully on Android too (they each have their own app).
The dictionary program,in particular, also has handwriting recognition and OCM.
