Is there already a thread like this on the forum? To be honest, I kind of dislike such threads in general, but for a 'specialized' forum like this, it could be interesting. We seem to have a continuous influx of new users with inventive names which can be hard to associate with lines of questioning/thought, given many are asking some of the same questions, so, since we have places to link folks to for common resources and ideas we've shared with one another and are fond of, perhaps having a thread to introduce yourself and talk about your language goals coming into RTK or just finishing it could be useful? It could engender a spirit of good cheer and prevent redundancy! Or maybe it would be totally pointless.

My goals for studying Japanese are really simple: conversation with family, etc. I work and have a family, thus studying is more of a chore sometimes.

Starting with basic Japanese, I started RTK in early 2009. Finished in 4 months, then started the Kanji Odyssey (KO2001) thing after several months of Minna no nihongo (みんなの日本語). KO2001 was going well for a while, then I went to Japan for a month. After my trip, I reanalyzed my RTK studies, stopped for a bit and restarted with Japanese keywords following the order in KO2001. I am now half way through the first book in KO2001 and slowly changing my RTK deck (which is mostly suspended) to Japanese keywords. I have a long term goal, so most of my subtask goals are months out. Just keep up with those anki review; my latest approach is timeboxing and studying throughout the day 10 mins per session.

When I am not nest0r I am studying math. I have to submit my thesis pretty soon, so for the past year I pretty much did not do any language learning.
I have been studying Chinese after completing RTK1. I like the feel of Japanese actually more than Chinese, but having a Chinese soon-to-be wife is motivation enough to study Chinese instead.

Yeah I guess that works: Mostly I think I was conflating two typical thread ideas and trying to make them work for this site: A way to reduce redundant entries with something like a Start Here thread to explain/link to stickies, the wiki, whatever. And some place for new users to describe 'where they're at' + goals to help 'refine' advice and link preferences/goals/ideas to specific people.

I mentioned it because it seems the forum lately has a lot of 'new blood' and sometimes I can't even keep track of what just created threads to post advice in because I can't remember if buzzerbeat123214 and 12314buzzbeater, etc., already received similar tips/recommendations or had preferences that would eliminate the need for me to mention such and such option. So I end up not bothering... "Nukemarine and Thora will surely appear with well-organized thoughts and links, it must be easy at this point since they've reposted them 500 times... " ;p

I've been reading this forum regularly for a while but I don't usually post anything.
I'm an engineering student in my 3rd year and I've been studying Japanese for about 2 years. That figure isn't exactly correct since I've had long breaks of no-study and little bursts of extreme-study periods spread throughout, like many people here

I used to have a Japanese girlfriend (and with her, many Japanese friends) and she was the reason I started studying, though now I want to continue studying because I feel very comfortable with Japanese culture and lifestyle. I've been to Japan a couple of times. I started studying with beginner textbooks, probably finished around 4-5 of them, haha. I first heard about and finished RTK last year. My current level is probably around JLPT2 and right now I am working on Core6000 (I just started it and I feel like I know a big part of the words already) and Kanzen Master 2kyuu Grammar.

My ultimate goal is to live in Japan for a while, maybe not forever, but I definitely want to try. At the moment it's probably the place I feel most comfortable at. Therefore, my next goal is to get a Job in Japan, which I hope to do this year. If possible, I want to pass JLPT1 this year, but I am not sure if that's feasible in the time I have left. But I will try my best.

I hope that's what nest0r hoped for ;p
