I just saw these books at the library. Not sure how new they are but I've never heard about them before (amazon lists a 2005 release date):

The advanced one was split into two books and focused around texts on various topics. It also had word lists and exercises. It seemed pretty good overall though I just glanced over it. Might be interesting for someone looking for an advanced textbook as those seem pretty rare.

I just started using the 中上級 books a few weeks ago.

Both levels of the series are in pairs of two. If you start this you need to get both books.

Here are my pros and cons so far for the 中上級 books

+ Readings are very high level stuff and in many different formats (newspapers, editorial opinions, charts and graphs).
+ Audio CD of all readings is available and it's a fairly high quality recording
+ All grammar and vocabulary explanations are in English, Korean, and Chinese
+ Enough reading comprehension questions and other tasks to keep you busy
+ 中上級 level book has readings with and without furigana (上級 level has no furigana at all)

- No spoken dialogues. This is all written language only. If you're looking for a dialogue heavy textbook this is not for you.
- Expensive. Both books plus the CDs are pushing 10,000 yen
- Grammar explanations could be expanded
- Could use an answer sheet for some of the questions

Here is a snippet from the first reading in the 中級 book to give you an idea what you're looking at. This is only 1/5th of the actual reading passage. Note the use of N1 grammar here.

戦後経済の高度成長期に学生時代を過ごしました。祖母は、「女性は自立しなくては。外国へ行きなさい」と言う人でした。また、独身で仕事を持つ叔母も、「力をつけておきなさい。そうすればチャンスがあったとき、迷わずのれるから」というのが口癖でした。

このような身近な女性の影響で、高校生でアメリカに1年留学しました。でも、十代の異文化との表面的な接触はカルチャーショックが大きく、逆にやや国粋的になって帰国しました。

大学卒業後は、就職の話もあったのですが、ごく自然に見合いで結婚しました。当時は女性の社会進出が始まっていました。実際、私の同級生も、放送局、出版社、航空会社などへ就職しましたが、私は特にしたいことがなく、身近に女性のほかの生き方の具体的なモデルもありませんでした。ですから、結婚に迷いはありませんでした。

専業主婦で、3人の子育てと教育に専念しました。何かしてみたいという漠然とした思いはありましたが、目の前のことをひとつひとつこなしていくことも人生だと考え、家事と育児をそれなりに楽しんでいたと思います。

子育てが一段落したころ、日本はバブル経済の時期で、日本語教育ブームでした。そのころ中国を旅行して、また異文化と接触しましたが、この接触は私にとってとても新鮮なものでした。 40を過ぎて、大学院に進み、日本語教育を専攻しました。その後、比較的順調に仕事がみつかり、今日に至ります。年齢で損をしたと感じたことはありません。

いま振り返ってみると、何かを犠牲にしてがむしゃらに勉強したことはありません。目の前のことをひとつずつこなすという生き方で、ストレスをためずにここまで来たと思います。

人間ですから、あせりや不安はありますが、どんな人生でも自分の選択です。何でも積極的に選んでやっているという意識が大切です。何事も経験してこそ見えてくるものがあります。子育てだって、家事だってそうです。

現代は多様性を認め合う時代です。主婦も選択できる時代です。何かをやり始めれば、自分の役割には自然に順序が生じます。必要に応じて何かを切り捨て、他人の評価は気にしないことです。
