Monbukagakusho Scholarship

#26
Well, I didn't get either the Fulbright or the Japan Foundation scholarship that I tried last year, so we'll see. Smile

And yeah, with respect to the original question asked several months ago, every male in the US is required to register for the selective service (draft), so that does not disqualify you. They mean active military.

If there's a string of scholarship applicant deaths in the UK anytime soon, I think we know the culprit.

For the chest x-rays, you should ask the consulate or wherever you are applying to for more details. I applied (USA) 3 years ago, and they told me don't worry about the x-ray. If you are selected, then you should have it done. Otherwise, getting an x-ray and not getting selected mean you just subtracted x amount of days from your life for no reason.

Yeah, definitely. Also, they usually make you wait a whole week (at least I did). I don't have that kind of time. I did all this crap in September of '09 and that fell through (tried to maybe go to a Japanese language school) and it's not like I've gone anywhere. I don't have tuebrculosis, damnit! Lol, anyway if I'm selected I would be more than happy enough to do it. I'm calling them Tuesday for all my questions. Have to see if I can substitute the principal's recommendation for maybe a teacher. I've never spoke with the principal, who does in a community college? Why would he care to recommend me?

my suggestion would be...

in case Joseph is pronounced like "Ioseph", then it would be

I talked to the consulate and they said that you need the health form but you can substitute a skin-prick TB test for the chest x-ray.

Not long until the app is due -- time to write my essays in Japanese...

It seems like they want to know what your research program will be. Just write stuff about your dissertation.

1 Present field of study(現在の専攻分野): Chemistry
2 Your research theme after arrival in Japan: Clearly explain the research you wish to carry out in Japan.(渡日後の研究テーマ:日本においてどういった研究がしたいかを明確に記入すること): Research about the rate of melting of ice cream when exposed to the burning sun of southern Kyushu
3 Study program in Japan: (Describe this in detail and concretely—particularly about the ultimate goal of your research in Japan) (研究計画:詳細かつ具体に記入し、特に研究の最終目標について具体的に記入すること。) : My ultimate goal is to test whether ice cream melts faster in Kyushu. I will proceed in 71 steps: first: study of...

Woah when did you hear about the interview? I sent in my application about a week and a half ago (it was due on the 29th of May), and I haven't heard anything yet.

I think he may have been talking about last year's application.

I just finished the Japanese version of my essay...man, that was hard. I'm not very good at formal writing, luckily I have some native speakers to check it with. (Of course like a good kanji dork I checked my kanji usage, I used 231 unique kanji with 3 non-jouyou.)

Yep, I actually just got my response: No.

They gave some generalization on how so many more applicants than usual applied this year so, regrettably, I did not make the interview stage.

Time to go find the next method of getting to Japan.

Why isn't there a post listing them all? Then I can just click on all the links without looking at what it is and apply.

IceCream Wrote:I'm really not sure what i'm supposed to write. I'm applying for a masters, and presumably it wants details about the plan for the masters dissertation. But the course also includes quite a lot of taught material, should i include that too? And what exactly should go where, i'm not sure how they want this split out from the way it's written...?
Also, i don't really have a present field of study. Does it want my last field of study, or what i want to study in Japan, since they're different? Also, if it wants my last field of study, is here the place to say how it's related to what i want to do now?

hope someone can help!!
You need to have a solid research proposal now. You can't just tell them you want to get a master's degree. Remember that the scholarship is for research and not for master's degrees. There are a lot of ways to get the scholarship to cover a master's program "if" you get accepted into one, but you still need to have the "research proposal" before you apply.

So hit the books and good luck.

This is what kept you from going to Japan with a Monbusho Scholarship.
They don't want people that want to go to Japan. They want people that want to do research and by chance the best place for their research is Japan.

BEST place you say? Now that's rings a bell...
ROBOTICS!
And a master is necessary then, because robotics is deep and advances fast.

Question: For the research, are the English and Japanese exams plus a degree the only requirements? No exams in the field?

I'm afraid if I get there (WOW) I would be kicked back here because of our universities' "weak" teaching and standards.

Edit: (After some reading in Japan's embassy website)

Even though the scholarship is oriented to a master or phd degree rather than research, the Study Area doesn't cover my interest:

"The scientific areas that have been selected by the Embassy for the last five years, don't take priority. These majors are namely; Architecture, Chemical Engineering, Dentistry, Materials Engineering, Bioproduction Engineering, Animal Production, Urban Planning, Karate, Plant Production, and Food Technology."
No Robotics, no control, no mechatronics!!

I sent in my documents yesterday, and I'm sure my transcripts are either there or on the way. I just want a free ride in life! They better call me and tell me how adorable my face is, and how much they want to send me to Japan. They'll go on to talk about how they'll give me some "tests" related to Math and Japanese and English, but how they don't care what I score. I can see the future now.

@undead, disconsider what you've read in the site.

You CAN go with robotics.

But be prepared to cite the name of the professors you want to work under. Contact them with your proposal even before applying to the monbusho scholarship. If you have a positive answer from a researcher from Japan you can use it in the interview.

Well, I made it to the interview stage, but after the interview who knows how long it takes for them to decide.

I missed this:
Quote:what essay did you have to write? Is that your research proposal bit, or is it something else?

what are you planning to research, btw?
Yeah, I was just talking about the research proposal. My topic is medieval commentaries on the Tale of Genji, specifically the 16th-century 岷江入楚(みんごうにっそ).

From what I've heard, it seems like the Consulates are really quick to decide who gets the interview, at least in the US.

I'm going to Waseda; I already have a professor there who I'm going to work with, so if this scholarship doesn't want to send me there I won't accept it unless it's my last option.

Will they call you even if you aren't accepted? My deadline was the 14th and I haven't been called, now I'm worrying. :|

I don't know about your country, but in Sweden, you do eventually get contacted, but it's way later. It's because even if you weren't accepted for an interview, you're still technically a reserve.

Congrats. When's your test date? I haven't gotten called yet, but if I get an interview it'll be July 13th for me I believe. Then my Japanese friend comes to stay at my house July 14th. Going to be exciting if we all succeed in our scholarships, yay!

That's nice to know. I'm in Chicago, and apparently this particular consulate covers the 11 surrounding states which is a fair amount. I'm hoping they're all bums and don't apply. Big Grin

Seconds ago I just got an email notifying me that I didn't make the cut. Next year I will be out of the age range, so no more MEXT for me I suppose. From here I can either try to convince my parents to borrow me thousands of dollars so I can go to a language school, or just spend thousands of dollars going to DePaul next year (I'm going to a community college now) and start my major. Any advice on how I could pay for a language school if my parents don't want to shell out thousands in cold, hard cash? My mom doesn't even have a job right now and they're divorced, so it makes things more difficult. Now I'm going off-topic but good luck to you guys, and if you can provide some help to me then please sned me a message.
