How is suicide different in Japan?

#51
My (Japanese) girlfriend's sister committed suicide, and I've learned through experience not to even mention the word around her.

Personally I think suicide is more "trendy" (for a lack of a better word) in Japan than countries where poverty etc. is the major factor.

Japan seems to have a lack of support for mental illness. Hell, going to a psychologist in Japan will cause raised eyebrows.

O Romeo, Romeo, Wherefore Art Thou Romeo?
Heheheheh perfect retort.

False! I have it in my random words I come across deck... I watch a lot of Samurai movies.

Might as well start a new topic in the Koohii Lounge on the subject of depression. Depression is not the only cause of suicide.

I'd like to see also people participating to share their experiences rather than enamour themselves with intellectual masturbation... seriously how many people have participated in this thread who have been through major depression in their life, or know someone in their family who has?

Making it short, but with great value:
Suicide is for those with a weak WILL to live.

I do believe that belief in God and after life makes a lot of difference.

Yes I agree that suicide is often for those with a weak will to live.

I'm not so sure if belief in an afterlife makes a huge difference.

I would think that many committing suicide might believe that this
world sucks and that there's no way the afterlife could be any worse (and
so they kill themselves to end the pain they suffer in this world).

Especially if you believe in reincarnation, maybe people will feel the
need to start over in their next life.

On the flip side, if you don't believe in afterlife and are suicidal,
then this world is a living hell and won't get any better. So you
kill yourself.

On a random note, one of my japanese friends was so surprised at
how similar my tastes are to Japanese people and told me "You
must have been Japanese in your previous life!".

Now if only I could kill myself now and return to that previous life...haha.... :-)

For the curious:

前生 【ぜんしょう】 (n) previous existence
後生 【ごしょう】 (n) afterlife

Have you ever considered suicide over the sheer curiosity of what's next?

And in the suicide forest, it would be awesome if people had a choice between this and suicide. If they think that they are determined enough to kill themselves, then they can as well take a piece of paper in their mouths and kill themselves after 12 hours, which is probably unlikely to happen.
