re: readingthekanji

So, just their quiz, perhaps reading the sentences they have, and going through the motions helps you learn/memorize things?
I do like the large reps of things that I am just learning, but I feel that once it gets a high enough rating, I'll never see it again and forget I learned it. This sort of thing happens in Anki as well, but is there anything else you do along with this ReadingtheKanji?

EDIT:
Wow, I remember this site from a looong time ago, had no idea it became a paysite. Luckily I don't have to pay Big Grin
Turns out it has really improved from last time I saw it...

Yeah, I didn't expect it to work. I have it hide the english sentence and definition. It shows me the kanji and the example sentence in Japanese and asks me to type the kana for the word. (Using the built-in IME.) It then shows me whether I got it right or wrong and what the english translation of the word is.

Using just that, I've found that by the time I learn the kana for the word, I also know the English translation for the word as well. I also find that by the time it's up in the light green status, I can recognize it really quickly when I see it elsewhere.

Some of the older stuff doesn't seem to come around often, and I've been forgetting some of it... But it's still the best thing I've found so far.

I've ordered from bk1 for a year and half now, so I pretty much know the drill. There are actually those not-too-rare instances when amazon.co.jp will be cheaper than bk1... namely when you're buying a crapton of books. Since amazon goes by flat rate + fee per book, and bk1 goes by weight, once you get past 15 books, amazon starts getting cheaper. (Or once you start going over the 7000 yen point in shipping costs for weight for bk1... which isn't too hard to do, really. Book weight adds up fast.)

The upside of bk1 is the ability to order SAL and save money. The downside of bk1 is waiting for books you ordered by SAL to ever freakin' show up... which can take a few weeks to a month, depending.

If you don't feel like waiting, you can order airmail, which is faster, but more expensive.

The other major downside to bk1 is not knowing how much shipping will be until after your package ships. That really sucks. My usual rough guide is 30% of the price for SAL, 35-40% for airmail, and up to 50% for EMS. It's not exact, it's just rough. (And sometimes the shipping is actually higher. -_-)

If you live in the US, you should *always* check Kinokunia Bookweb in the US, just in case. The prices are higher (because they ship the books over from Japan), but the shipping is faster than airmail and dirt cheap. Starts at $7 for one book via UPS ground. (It's NOT $7 per book. I think they go by weight. Usually cheap, though, and they calculate it before you pay at checkout.)

It means you have to do some research work (onoz!), but there you go.

I'm tempted just to blow $6 to give it a shot on the 2級 stuff- I tried out the 4級 and it seemed ok- sometimes a little slow though (Australian internetのせいと思う). Not sure if I'd get sick of it fast though... and how effective their algorithms are. Too bad I don't have one of those nifty free accounts Smile
