Just wanted to say thanks for your (and whoever else helped) work on the sorted 2k/6k anki decks. The sentences with core 2k get pretty crazy at around level 4; and introduce like 3-4 new words and up to 6 new kanji or more per sentence! So I decided to start doing your decks in conjunction with the older unsorted 2k deck. Hopefully everything comes together. Thanks again!

Just wanted to say thanks so much for making this very detailed learning course. I started the original RTK 1 but your RTK 1 & 3 deck is just right for my schedule. I'm halfway through and looking forward to getting into the vocab.

I'm going to leap aboard this bandwagon and give my thanks as well. After finishing RTK I was flailing a bit, and it was so great to have a roadmap.

I'm wondering if I went overboard releasing smaller sets of Anki decks. First, it makes it complicated for the new user. Second, it's out of date as Anki now stops munge'ing (is that a word?) the audio/image files.

Anyway, current plans are to finish up the kana videos, make some kanji videos then maybe figure out the best way to add grammar tutor videos.

Thank you for this. However, it is kind of confusing for a beginner like me. With the RTK deck- are we supposed to write in mnemonics? Or are we just supposed to remember them for the keyword?

Do whatever you want.

I only wrote mnemonics in my RTK deck when I thought I might have trouble remembering my mnemonic for a character. Most of the time I could remember the mnemonic or just imagine a new one in a few seconds when I saw the character, even if I couldn't remember from the keyword alone. I also put images in the keyword field.

Hi, I recently finished rtk and I'm planning on using a mix of Tae Kim, Core6k and Genki (I own Genki 1) for my upcoming studies but i have a couple doubts...

I'm thinking about going through Genki 1 (and probably Genki 2) then studying Tae Kim along with Core...would this order be appropriate ?
I'm also totally lost regarding card layouts since everyone seems to have it's own format. While going through Core, should I use a Kanji > Kana layout, thus practicing comprehension/reading or should I use a Dictation layout instead?
Finally, I'd like to put some stuff into Anki while I'm going through Genki. Example sentences? Grammar? Vocab?

I know I should just see what works for me and stick to it but if I'll be glad if I can have a bit of advice before diving into all this =)

I'm guessing if you've gone through Genki 1 and 2, you won't need Tae Kim. I'd also probably suggest doing kore on the side along with the vocab from Genki 1/2.

So by that logic, it's fine for me to use Tae Kim & Core 2k at the same time?

I would think so.

Just a small question, while talking about Genki 1 and 2 and core2k and KO2001: core2k (or 6k) does cover a lot KO2001 (or with core6k almost everything KO2001 can offer you), doesn't it?

I'm currently on #201 of RTK 1, and I was wondering...should I go all the way through RTK, or stop at 555, and go through the beginner steps of this guide?

Depends. How well are you currently memorizing the current kanji?

I would suggest not stopping with RTK because your goal is to eventually know all of them. Your goal wouldn't be to achieve N5 level proficiency because that's really only the beginning. Constantly move forward.

No, thats not a great retention rate by any means. You're probably gonna get up to 555 and have to go back through those 555 again.

Lol now that I think of it... what kind of proficiency is N5 level proficiency ?

It's like nothing. Nothing more than a milestone. You probably can´t do anything worthy with this knowledge. So moving forward is the only way.

I think N4 is worthless also. I think my current level is N4 or better because I do really well on practice tests (80% or so). The first JLPT test I take will be N1 (it's the only really valuable one). I may never get my Japanese to a level where I'm ready to take it.

I have heard from others that passed N1 that N1 is also worthless...but it is a good measure of your ability to comprehend written Japanese.

I'm a bit confused as to how a milestone is worthless? If it was worthless no one would need it. But getting to Nx level will help you get to N(x-1) level, which to me contains some value. Then again maybe any label is meaningless apart from what you can do with what it represents practically.

Ok 2 questions. Maybe these have been answered some where but I can't find them and I am soooo confused!

So. I downloaded the core 2k/6k beginner decks (vocab and sentence) and the media files. So where is the .media folder? I can't seem to find it! Do I need to make one? I totally don't know what to do here.
Also how and why should I import all the downloaded decks into one master vocabulary deck?

Ok one more. On the beginner vocab deck I'm just supposed to know the word right? Not the entire sentence right?

OK I have quite a few questions about these methods (2001KO, Anki, etc.), and they're probably silly and novice to most of the users on this forum, but I'm a bit overwhelmed...If someone experienced wouldn't mind adding me on Skype, MSN, etc. to help me sort everything out, that'd be fantastic. Or, I could post my questions here, but there's quite a few...

Good point, maybe some of these questions will help other users. Well, after filing through the forums and Google, I couldn't find answers to these probably obvious questions. Well...here we go:

1. This may be a REALLY dumb question, but do I need to buy the 2001KO audio CD and workbooks?

2. The audio and image files for the sentences and vocab, are these 3 files used for ALL of Nukemarine's Core 2k/6k decks? Not just his beginner one?

3. What is RtK Lite/Ultralite? After doing some research, it seems I don't even need to worry about this, as I am doing all of RtK anyways, I think?

4. I know this should be really more up to my personal taste, but I like having the "beginner process" layed out step by step. I should go Kana/Kanji, then grammar, then vocab, then listening, correct? And if so, should I just keep trudging through RtK without doing anything else? Or would it be a good idea to start studying grammar then vocab now, at the same time as RtK...

5. Concering the RtK 1&3 deck, is there a way to start using it now even though I haven't finished all of RtK 1, or even started RtK 3?

6. I noticed it mentions in Nukemarine's deck that his Core 2k/6k words are arranged in 2001KO order, could someone explain to me what this means?

7. A bit off topic, but if I have to bring up the story to remember the Kanji in the RevTK section, should I mark it as wrong?

8. When I finish my Kanji in the book itself for a day, I input them into here. When should I do the new cards? Right after I enter them into RevTK, or should I wait a day?

9. What are spreadsheets for...?

I think that's all I have...for now...thanks for any help. Also, if any of these questions were answered elsewhere, I apologize, as I could not find them myself.

I'll only answer to what I know for sure (much quicker).

2. Image and audio are only for 2k I think.
3. Lite and ultralite are decks of the 1000 and the 500 most frequent (at least that's what I understood) RTK kanji, so you can get to real Japanese quicker than the usual between 3 months and 1 year. Precisions here and here:

4. Well it depends on your priorities (what you need/want with the language), but you should do kata and kana right now, then some grammar with RTK, and wait to really start vocab until after you've completed RTK. Listenning/reading and speaking/writing can be done at any stage (cf priorities), though it's better to understand you're input.
7. I think you should.
8. It's a methodological issue, so there is no right or wrong answer, but I did it right after and I prefered it. The important thing being to only tackle new cards after you've cleared your reviews.
