Ok, I rewrote the suggested path on the front page taking in things I've learned over the last couple of years. The vocabulary is the most complicated part as I'm having users unsuspend words so that they only study words for the kanji they've learned.
I also spread the grammar and kanji studying out a bit. Overall, this should be good generic roadmap for anybody. It's not easy and it takes lots of hours but should be more enjoyable overall without spending excessive hours in any one area.
Next I'll edit the review/study tips page I link to at the bottom to stress how to approach each area. That has been a recurring complaint.
Thoughts and suggestions?

I've pushed through all my changes to the main spreadsheet. This includes the cloze deletion fixes, the proper image filenames, some formatting issues, and whatever other little things I've changed along the way while using the deck. Now would be a good time to generate a new deck or update existing ones.

Thank you very much.
I'm at work at the moment so it'll be a bit before I can do the changes.

Is there any way to transfer progress from an older version of the deck to whatever is most recent one?

I have a question about the Clozed Delete Grammar deck. I'm already pretty far in tae kim's guide and I just started using the deck in anki, but every once in a while I encounter a vocabulary word (like the first card - [...fish]).
Is this intentional? I thought this deck was about the grammar and not the vocabulary.
edit: Ok, I might be really stupid, but after reading a whole bunch about it here I still have no idea how to use the Core decks.
I downloaded the shared core deck and copied the very nice layout given here (with a few changes). But what am I supposed to do with it? Just review the cards and fail those I don't know until I start remembering them? Or am I supposed to learn the words beforehand from somewhere?

The grammar deck is based off his example sentences. [...Fish] just happened to be his example that demonstrates a word not being a proper sentence. I've assumed the deck is being used along side the website information.
Before, the Core deck could be used after someone 'learned' the words via iKnow.jp website. The optimized deck vocabulary however must be learned from deck itself. As such, it's important for each word to fully process the word (read it, speak it, understand it, use it in a sentence).
First, set Anki so that a '2' shows the new card again in 10 minutes. Te first time you learn a word: say the word, visualize the word (with the image if need be), write down the word, write down the kana, say the example sentence, visualize the example sentence (with photo), write down the example sentence, mark the card a '2' so you'll see it in 10 minutes. This is time consuming as it's 3 to 5 minutes a card but it's very important.
From here on out, when it comes up for review, you're just going to write down the word. Also, try to use it in the clozed example sentence (difficult early on so don't stress it too much). You only mark the card wrong if you mess up the vocabulary word (pronunciation or writing).

I've updated the spreadsheet and the Core 2k/6k optimized deck based on both netsplitter's and my own changes.
About Tae Kim: guess it makes sense that he'd update some of his example sentences. Looks like most are the same, but the first few are off. Should not be a show stopper though.

Quick question here. I am interested in trying out the method defined in your opening post. Now if I am to understand correctly, I will go through 555 kanji using the RTK method (but in 2001KO order). Firstly, doesn't going through the kanji in that order mess up the way primitives build on each other? How exactly will this work? Next, in the same section it says to go through Tae Kim. Wouldn't I need to know the vocab readings from the next step to be able to get through his book? And on the note of the vocab, if I am using RTK method to learn kanji and then so soon replacing them with actual vocabulary, wouldn't that mess up the process since I would be going back to RTK method for the JLPT 4 section? Thanks ahead of time.

@Fallacy,
The idea is you're doing the 555 2k1KO kanji in Heisig's order. When I say sort by 2k1 index and unsuspend 1-555 in that field, Anki will still show those cards in Heisig's order since that's the order I originally added them. Later, when you unsuspend 556-1110, it'll still show those new cards in Heisig's order. It'll just skip all the suspended cards. Now, it's up to you, but you can unsuspend cards that are used as primitives if you want.
For Tae Kim, he's using simple vocabulary and tells you ahead of time what the vocabulary happens to be. For the most part, you still only care about the grammar so never fail if you don't know one of the words unless it's essential to the grammar in question. On top of that, there should be a field that allows you to put vocabulary definitions to help out early on.
For the Vocabulary, if you unsuspend the cards I recommend, you're not going to see Kanji in those words that has not been studied during RTK. The example sentences will have kanji you haven't seen, but they're there as examples so don't stress those words.
Hope it helps.

Thanks for the response. I guess the only thing I'm left wondering is if doing RTk followed by learning the meanings and then doing RTK again would defeat the purpose of keywords and remembering it in the future.
Edit: Also wouldn't it be confusing since you're skipping primitives and the way some kanji build and that sort of thing?

Hi, I have a little problem with the Core 2k deck. I can't seem to get any sound out of it.
I read in the first post about having to download some files to put into the anki deck .media folder. However I searched through anki's folder in program files and through just about every button in anki. Where can I find this .media folder so that the sound works for Core 2k deck?

@Shock222
I had the same difficulties concerning the ".media" folder. Create the folder in the same folder your deck is in using the deck name +.media for the folder name.
example:
Deck File Name = MyDeck.ank (sorry, can't quite remember the actual extension at the moment)
Media Folder Name = MyDeck.media
hope that helps.

I'm having problems with the sorted Kore2k6k anki media files. I have another core deck that works fine with audio and pictures, but this one no matter what I do I cannot get the sound or pictures to function. I've put them in an identical folder name with the .media heading as the location of the anki file for the deck. I've tried moving them around, renaming them to other things, anything I can think of and it still won't work. Any ideas?
Thanks.

Anki has settings that change the location of your media folder. There's on for the file's location, one for dropbox, and one for an optional location. I think it's an overall preference so you have to make sure your other decks have the same media location.

Thanks, Nukemarine. Sadly, after messing with it more, it still doesn't work. I have it set to use dropbox for my media. I moved all the media into a folder by the same name as the file except with the .media extension there. No go. I then moved the file over into the drop box folder too. Still no go.
Will it hurt if I just use the Japanese Core 2000 Step cards? Those work for me. Does the order make a huge difference?
Thanks.
Edit: Just tested the deck on my wife's laptop and it worked perfectly fine. Now I'm confused. Is there any reason why having it set to dropbox and putting the media in the dropbox folder would make it not work? On my wife's it was all set to default.

Hello Everyone,
I apologize for asking this in advance if I just missed something. I downloaded the
Core 2k/6k Image and Audio Files but I'm not exactly sure how to unsuspend the right cards.
Do I just suspend every card and then manually count 1-326 and 401-574 for the Core 2k/6k deck or is there a way to filter in Anki?
Thanks, and again, sorry if I am asking the obvious.

Well, I finally got it to work. I had to disabled the usage of the dropbox folder, tell it to just use the media folder next to the file and then keep everything within the dropbox folder. In theory this should still work with Dropbox the way I expect it to with the added benefit of the media also functioning properly.
This is completely unrelated, but based on my current pace, I hope to be finishing up RTK1 around mid July (though I'll keep reviewing). I'd like to do some of RTK3, since I actually enjoy the process, but I think I want to focus on the more useful characters. I plan on hitting the grammar and vocab hard soon and if I have less new characters to learn I'll open up some more time. I read on this forum that there is a list or deck of I think 200 or 300 of the more useful kanji from RTK3 but now I can't find anything mentioning that anymore. Does anyone have a link or something I can use to get the deck or list?
Thanks.

Maybe I`ve just hit a slump. Maybe I`m just fed up trying to review the same words over and over.. I`m not sure.
I really really appreciate all the work that everyone has done creating decks but am I the only one who feels the example sentences for the Core2000 are the least inventive things ever? Not only that but occasionally contain several words that are either not covered at all or at least not by that section, defeating the purpose of having the sentence there.
Maybe it`s just me but I don`t see the point in having a sentence to give context if you can`t understand what is trying to be said because certain words have yet to be covered.
Nonetheless appreciate of what people have done, it`s just something that`s really been annoying me lately and is a major slash to my motivation.
