Oh ok. I though maybe the vacuum interfered with the TV signal and the screen didn't become clear until he unplugged the vacuum....

Now that you mention it, I can see a similarity in the shapes. But I would never have guessed that was the joke. Part of it is that I didn't even recognize the TV was showing sumo, and also my own expectation of what an electric plug looks like is very different (they have a completely different shape here).

Come to think of it that actually could be it. Haha... I had no idea really about the sumo mat looking like the plug which is probably why I was a bit clueless.
yeah, 母さん asks him to unplug the vac and he wanders back over to the tv and is like the sumo is on! and his dad sarcastically (i think) says... "oh, you'd forgotten? well that sure reminded you" and he's like "yeah, a bit". haha.

I think the dad had forgotten sumo and the kid turns on the tv. The dad has no idea why the kid remembered the sumo.

Of course, the whole point of that blog post is that the joke is hard to get even for Japanese people.

I thought the fat old woman shouting was what reminded him of the sumo.

Whats with the kid's head? Are his brains coming out the back of his skull?

In the previous comic he fell into a woodchipper. It was much more funny.
