Not sure how many of you are Lost fans here, but as you might know this season there's a new Japanese character that often speaks in Japanese, and there are no subtitles translating what he says. In the most recent episode "The lighthouse" He says something to Hurley in Japanese. Hurley asks someone else (Jacob) "What did he say?" and Jacob replies, "You don't want to know."

I couldn't make out what he said because he said it so damn fast. My listening skills suck anyway. Did anyone catch what he said? Would you mind writing it down here? Write it down in kana. I'll do the translation part myself. It'll be more fun that way. Thanks!

If it's like most other Japanese in western productions, it's probably gibberish or a literal translation.

ANATA NO OKAASAN HA FUTTOTEIMASU!

He said something along the lines of

"You're lucky I have to protect you or else I would have already taken your head."

The actor is (I think) a fairly well known Japanese actor, but there is something a bit...odd about the Japanese he uses in Lost. It seems like he *always* uses pronouns that would usually be dropped.

But that may just be my imagination

well he did spend the first episode speaking only in raw command form, うてぇ！証明しろっ！
he's definately a very terse samurai,

much different than this actor's (his name is 真田　広之 さなだ　ひろゆき btw) other famous role as the title character 黄昏清兵衛　（たそがれせいべい） he ended every sentence with ごっはんっすども　which i took to mean ございますども　 in the dialect.

It's cool that now LOST has some Japanese in it too, I was just frustrated I didn't know enough Korean to understand what Jin and Sun are saying

I think that was the mumbled bit you missed...or something like that. I can't make that bit out well either. But it sounds like なら or ながら or something along those lines

It can't be that, that's grammatically incorrect (and ながら doesn't make sense there anyway).

I've played the thing almost 10 times and I can't hear that part clearly, but I think it might be 守らねばならんのは.

I was thinking that he seems to talk quite strangely, because unlike most of the dorama and anime I watch, I can barely understand a word he says. His sentence patterns are definitely very different.

He's saying, "俺がお前を守らねばならんのだ。運がよかったな。でなければ、その首をはねてた。"

I'm not watching Lost, so I don't know if his lines, pronunciations, acting and whatnot are natural in context. But the Japanese line in the clip doesn't sound odd, and his pronunciation is clear at least in the excerpt.

Keep in mind that many of the users of this site are used to listening to squeaky cartoon people. Natural speech can therefore be somewhat difficult to understand.

Hm... I'd like to find out, but Lost happens to be in English(mostly).
