Ok, small update. The current version of jed can export word lists to anki file which then can be used by ankidroid. ankidroid even shows furigana. 2 awesome apps for free. I'm a fan :-)
Any new apps on your side?

I am waiting for the day theres a usable anki on droid.
It needs to have sound, sync, and proper scheduling.

That day was around April

Its tricky though because that version is not available through the Market. But if you want it really bad you will get past this easily.

Hi, I use Ankidroid with my Galaxy S I9000.

I use the first file of the Core2k/6k File from Nukemarine. Including Pictures and MP3.

Only sometimes I get no Sound or the sound is played two times at the same time.
- If there was not sound, i close and open Anki and it is ok.
- If the sound was played twice, I open the answer and choose fast "show question" again.

Scheduling works normal, only that it don't shows how much time it will take to get the question-card again.

I think sync is not working, but I don't use it. With my Smartphone I have it with me everywhere, so I really don't need it.

There is a beta for Ankidroid with synchronizing, too.

and i have a few questions about epwing readers

can you choose from which dictionary you want results on droidwing? or it automatic shows results from all the dictionaries you have installed?

can you type on droidwing with the app Simeji?

can u use jump fuction? something like clicking a word-kanji and searching it in another dictionary (like ebwin for windows does if your are familiar)

Yes you can. I have three dictionaries on mine and you can choose which ones to use.

Not that I could figure out. If you could copy the text from the definitions you could just search for the new word. Unfortunately I couldn't figure out how to do that either.

i did a little search and i found a copy & paste app released recently

its called copy paste it and its available for trial on the android market
can some one try it? it will be really convenient to use it with the dictionaries

what epwing dictionaries you recommend? i have download Edict Kanjidic i think they are okay for now even though i didnt like so much the E-J translation of edict
but i want a conjucation Dic and i cant find something free do you know any?

BTW I just updated to Ankidroid 0.4.1, several new features, my favorite is that now it is possible to download shared decks.
The processing of the deck takes a while and it looks like the app is dead but eventually it finish the work and the deck can be used with no problems.

If there's one application I couldn't do without, it's probably Simeji. Without it, it would be difficult to input Japanese into the phone.


Some other applications I have.
WWWJDIC has been very useful. It has a handwriting function and OCR function, so you can finger-write in kanji or take a photo of a kanji and look it up. (The OCR function has been pretty disappointing with certain fonts, but it has worked a few times).

nadareboshi is a game. It's quite addicting, and it actually requires you to know very little Japanese.
basic data AM memorization: It's a collection of "basic facts" (not really basic at all) and the application quizzes you on areas such as finance, computer, medical.. etc. I only have it for the computer area. the other parts are too difficult since it's written in kanji that make me cry.
Newspaper Info Reader: an RSS feed of various Japanese newspapers.
himekuri10: Japanese-style old timey calendar. I mostly use it to get the lunar Calendar date and to amuse myself with who was born on that day.
kanji power mini: An evil game that quizzes the user on kanji that even most Japanese people would be lucky to know.

I don't use all these programs daily. the ones I use at least once a week are:

the Omikuji program I use almost everyday, but all it does it give you a fortune reading. That's all.


I use AnkiDroid at the gym for an hour while jogging on the tredmill. Kaki Memo I keep around to jot down quick phrases or kanji I haven't seen before but don't want to look up right away.

I've tried it, but it really drains the battery. I've only tried hard subs (which are quite visible.)

Battery is not a problem for me since I have chargers at home & work, hard subs for Japanese shows are rare and I don't like the idea of making them myself. Want to keep this process as simple as possible: put 2 files on my phone and enjoy

Well I just got my HTC Desire today and so far it's working out great. I installed Simeji, Aedict, AnkiDroid, DroidWing, and Kaki Memo. But I"m curious about one thing. How do you go about downloading Japanese Apps? searching for them in the android market does nothing. I looked for なだれ星 and アンドロモナ but came up with nothing. I then tried to search for them in romaji, but that didn't do anything either.

And I'm curious if it's possible to have Ankidroid sync with the server like it does on a computer. I'm guessing it's not possible, but I'm not quite sure.

No idea but maybe they are only available on Japanese Market so you'd have to root your phone and use Market Enabler.

Awesome thanks for the link. seems to work like a charm. Words like root your phone kinda scare me though. Might need to just live without those apps. lol.

More necroposting, I know. At gibosi's suggestion, I downloaded AEDict for the odd time that I need to draw a kanji I don't know a reading for, or can't ask someone for a reading. It's much more responsive than my old iPhone.

One annoying thing about AEDict-- it requires about 60MB of SD Card space for the dictionaries, but at least it's on the SD card. A 32GB card is already on the way. This thing is stuffed full.

AEDict is a pretty good little EDict program, and it's free. It's EDict + Tanaka. As long as you know what you're getting into, it's fine for what it is.

In my search for alternative IMEs to Simeji, I bumped into Google変換マッシュ... and I had to yank the battery out of my Nexus One to recover it. It was a fight to get it off of my N1. It's very much in alpha mode, apparently. (I'm running Froyo 2.21, maybe that had something to do with it?)

I tried some of the OpenWNN variants... I still like Simeji. I haven't found an IME where you can draw kanji yet, though.

I have Aoisora, and I've been meaning to use it for reading 青空文庫 formatted books on my N1, but I haven't had time. It's getting better with every revision. It would be nice if it would work with Droidwing.

For DroidWing, I figured out how to add the ALC online dictionary to my searches. You just need to add this search URL:

I wouldn't recommend the new version of Astrid Tasks. The 2.14.3 version was much better than the new version. It had everything for free that the new version broke.

Also, it looks like Beautiful Widgets is broken, too. I'm not sure what's up with that. I haven't updated it in 3 months, though, and the old version 2.999 still runs fine with Froyo 2.21.

One question: can you change the apps that Simeji's mushroom points to? It wants to use AEDict, and I want it to use DroidWing, but I can't find a way to tell it to do so, other than unchecking AEDict.

I still haven't figured out exactly what they added in Froyo 2.21. More sparkle?

MortPlayer Audio and MortPlayer Music: I don't like automatic search of my SD-Card, so I put in every folder a file with the name '.media' and sort my songs and books after folders

What I need for Android or PC ist a good podcatcher which can download the files into different folders (every podcast in it's own folder) and it should be possible to download PDF-Files.

@Teskal-- I saw the HanWriting program, but I wasn't sure how well it worked. You like it?

I've had all kinds of problems with Android messing up the names of mp3 files I put on there in Japanese which show up as gibberish.

It makes playlist editing even more of a royal pain in the butt than it already is.

I'm not a fan of opening up edit pad pro and doing it by hand, but that seems to be the most accurate way of doing it. I don't particularly like DoubleTwist, but it's looking like I'm going to have to go back to it.

For a podcatcher, right now I'm looking at Juice. Not sure it'll do exactly what you want, though. You might need to write a script or something to handle the PDFs.

From what I have read, it fixes the wifi sleep issue, updates some Google apps, fixes the hole that allowed one click root to work, and it does something with Exchange security.

For me, the biggest thing was the wifi sleep issue. Before, I would connect to my home wifi and plug in the charging cable before I slept, and it would lose the wifi connection over night. This has been fixed. Life is good.

I also notice that the message header in Google mail is a bit different.

Ah yeah, I hate what they did to GMail. The old version was better. Now it's all cluttered up.

Now that you mention it, WiFi is more stable, and I don't have it constantly asking me which network I want to join.

I have noticed that copy/paste/selecting text is easier, too.

If anyone has any ideas for fixing Japanese text in music file titles rendering properly, I'd love to hear it. Half of my music shows up fine, while the title information in the new stuff is just garbage. It plays fine, but the information is unreadable. So I have to guess at everything, or convert it all to romaji. Bleh.

And a good playlist editor would be awesome. I'm still searching for one. I may try DoubleTwist again out of desperation.

I could write Kanji with Hanwriting, but it is not very good. Some complicated Kanji made much trouble.

I hope it will be better with froyo, because I think the app need much power, because it can't follow my finger if I am to fast

is there also a way to put your phone in Japanese language. If I go to change to change language. I can only choose french,english and Dutch =/ ( I have the htc desire btw)

I found a great 青空文庫 format text reader called Vertical Text Viewer. It has an installable Mincho Font that's much more readable than the standard Android font, the ability to choose an online dictionary for word lookup, (just tap the word, hold, and you'll get a popup), and a nice English interface.

The only weird thing it does is turn some punctuation marks sideways, like ! and ?. ?!?

I still give it the nod over Aoisora, which I've been using for a while. Aoisora still doesn't support dictionary lookup. An interface will popup when you select a kanji, but it just takes you to Google. I can't for the life of me find an option to change that. It's very tweakable otherwise for readability, though.

Google Listen is an okay on-phone podcatcher for use on the go. It's good for downloading "disposable" content you don't want to keep. But be warned-- it's kind of buggy, as it's still in beta. I'm using Juice on my PC instead. It's better, but there are tradeoffs with both programs.

I solved my corrupted MP3 tags with MP3Tag, and just mass-changed the tag type to ID3v2.3. It's a great little program, and it's free

@ loonytik-- I think that's just a manufacturer's decision, not an Android OS thing. That's one of the annoying things about Android.

ocircle, where did you get the clock and weather widgets?

For quick reading I toggle between the excite.co.jp mobile site and colordict app. Excite has a section on it's news page called びっくり that has short, unusual, interesting stories. Colordict is not as extensive as the other dictionary apps mentioned, but it's very fast and keeps a history of the words you look up. So I copy a word I don't know from excite and paste it into colordict. With my phone I can long press the home button to pull up a quick menu of recently used apps, which is helpful when toggling back and forth.

Dolphin browser features tabs, so you could have your newspaper in one tab and an online dictionary in another, but this was slow for me, and the online dictionaries didn't always know when I had pasted something into them. The Steel browser's text select feature is easier to get to, but I found it rendered pages slowly.

I also make regular stops to Anki online. I would love to use and Anki app, but I'm a big syncher and I'm nervous trusting my precious deck to an alpha version. Reviewing the Kanji doesn't have a special mobile site, but I've found it works fine if you zoom out a little.
