I have twin 4-y-o boys and they were given one of these (different brand) a couple of years back and I picked it up recently on a whim to try some kanji and have been taking it everywhere with me ever since! You'll get some funny looks, course, but that's half the fun .

234 kanji so far. Gambaremasu ne!

I found a movie after searching for 'boogie board lcd', instead of just 'boogie board'. It looks really cool, and not very expensive, but I'm not sure how much (or if) I'd use it.

I also remember hearing about something with paper that turns black from water, then when it dries it turns white again. Does anybody know what that is?
