New program for vocabulary and sentence mining

#26
I like it too. I also like how you link to the source of the sentence. Since I'm not sure what all it can do, here's some suggestions:

1. Offer an option to add Furigana to words that are at or above your level (if Level 2, then Level 2, 1 and 0 words not being test get Furigana). Another option is to add Furigana to all words.

2. Offer an option to slowly add new words that are below one's level. So if I'm working at level 2, some level 3 and 4 words slowly get added. Adding proportionally sounds best.

3. Highlight the Kanji that are being tested either by underline or a different color.

4. Perhaps use the Anki spacing algorithm.

5. Further down the road, but maybe offer a Text to Speech option (with the tested word blanked out).

Being online, it looks like it'll work great with Rikaichan or Stardict pop-up dictionaries.

Anyone use this with iPod phone and touch yet?

Its very well done, I especially like the links to the source, thats a fantastic idea and one that has a innumerable amount of uses.

Few things that I personally would like to see, though a few people have also said the same thing as me.

1. Small gripe, but a auto converter to kana or make it accept romaji would be great.

2. Probaly very hard to implement but a translation of that sentence of atleast the kanji compound would be fantastic.

3.I cant put my finger on it so this probaly will not help much, but, I find the UI quite limiting, just feels that it needs a bit more information on the side, maybe somthing like a paragraph of where the sentence was taken from or somthing.

Otherwise fantastic effort and a site that I will be adding to my daily routine, cant get enough Japanese learning websites!

I just finished releasing the following changes:
- You can now remove words that the system automatically selected for you. Simply go to the Vocabulary section and click 'Remove' next to the word you want to remove.
- The input box for the answer in the exercises no longer turns green when you input a correct answer.
- The target word for each exercise is now underlined.

If you were just using the system you might need to refresh/restart your browser to see these changes.

IMO a pure JLPT focus is only good for JLPT specific study.
Yes, there is a large amount of words not included in the JLPT that should be studied. I'm currently looking into several ways to more properly support such words. However, moving away totally from the JLPT lists/structure would be difficult in our situation.

yukimine Wrote:It would be nice to have an english definition for the word we're being tested in the exercises field.
This is certainly something we could add. I'll just need to change the design of the exercises a little.

There was actually a dictionary look-up feature in the previous version of this system. It was not migrated to the web-based version because we thought that everyone would just use rikaichan instead.

drivers99 Wrote:I could swear that it had me type だか as the answer for 高 in 高い (because I got it wrong when I typed たか ) but in the vocab list it says たかい. Is that normal? だ vs た I mean, I see that 高 can be だか but why is the vocab word たかい then?
Yes this could certainly have been an error. Basically Unidic is trying to be clever and detect when certain consonants are voiced. Unfortunately it doesn't do a very good job at it. I'll fix the reading for this word.

The system is basically already doing this. But it currently does not include furigana for words at your level. I'll look into adding some more options for this.

It would be difficult to display more of the original source besides the sentence itself. Especially since some news articles are fairly short so we would end up re-printing almost the entire article (which the newspaper companies wouldn't be happy about). I will be making some changes to the design of the exercises in order to include some more information about the target word though.

I just sent you a reply (mostly about using your site from iPhone) through your survey on the site but I forgot to mention one more thing which is that rikaichan doesn't really apply. I suppose I could use a dictionary with it instead but it is a good reason to include translations on your site (of the vocab words at least) if you have a good way to do it.

I just finished releasing a dictionary look-up feature for the exercises. Now if you move your mouse pointer over a word the definition will be displayed.

hi gh123,

i really like this idea and hope you continue to improve on the interface.

i have a quick bug fix for you: in safari, the answer field will show you autocomplete suggestions when you start typing, based on your previous inputs. i believe if you put autocomplete="off" in your <input> tag, it will fix this.

one feature i'd like to request: to be able to see the definition of the word you are being quizzed on. often i see the word, know its reading, but only have a rough idea of the meaning. i know the idea is to learn the meaning through context, but it would be useful as a consistency check when the context doesn't give much away. i'd say just allow the hover definition to work, and it's the user's own responsibility not to cheat.

also, regarding the hover definitions, please allow it to be turned off with a preference, for those of us using dedicated tools like rikaichan.

cheers

Hello gh123,

This is great!... but I really want to export the sentences to Anki.

Others have mentioned the same thing (Anki plugin or Anki export) earlier in the thread so I'm curious why you haven't addressed it.

Like many on this forum, I'm using Anki as my SRS program. I don't want to have to deal with another flashcard system. But your functionality that automatically mines sentences from Japanese news websites based on a vocab list that the user defines -- that piece would be very helpful to me if I could somehow integrate it with Anki.

Wow this program is awesome.
Unfortunately it's useless to me. Even the JLPT1 vocabulary is too easy. Tried 20 problems, only 1 I got wrong was the one I did in romaji instead of hiragana lol.

I'd love to see something a little more challenging, it's a shame I didn't have this earlier, it's fun

Edit: did a bunch more, found some challenging words which was cool, although still wouldn't mind something a little harder

First I would just like to announce that a big update to the New Exercise section has just been released. It allows you to have much finer control over which words are selected to learn. You can now also have the system suggest words that are not in the JLPT.

Thanks for pointing this out. It has been fixed.

I will be releasing a new layout for the example-based exercises soon which will include the definition of the word being studied.

I will try to add a preference for this in the Profile section soon.

I have not addressed it yet because I've been thinking about how to best implement it into the system. Many other people have been suggesting and asking for ways to search/access all of the sentences we are collecting. So we are thinking about adding another section to the system that allows people to conduct customizable searches on the entire sentence database. I believe that it would be best to implement the export functionality into this new section. However, as a temporary solution I will look into adding a way to export all of the sentences you have studied so far.

The updates just released allows you to select words that are not in the JLPT directly from the New Exercises section. However, since we are using frequencies to rank the words, there will still be a lot of easier words suggested at the beginning. I will look into adding a way to skip down to the more low frequency words for those people looking for more of a challenge.
