I just got to stop and say that initially I was looking for Japanese hip hop simply as a supplement to learning the language... but at this point I've really become a fan of the music itself.

You know these narrow little alleys in the videos, with the exposed pipes and graffiti? Are these common in cities like Tokyo? I want to see the full diversity of Japan when I go, definitely including some of these ghetto areas.

This one is decent. Though an obviously simple beat, it works and S.L.A.C.K. goes in on this one!

slightly off topic. Im studying French now and would like to listen to some good French hiphop. Something along the sames lines of the hiphop found in the thread. Any French hiphop enthusiasts who can lend a hand?

This is BY FAR the best thread on here. I used to think Japanese Hip-Hop was just some garbage like Soulja Boy with all the "yo yo keep it real thug life" type of nonsense, but it's far from that. This is actually some of the best music I've heard.

I mean when I was in High School I would listen to Wu-Tang, Mobb Deep, Nas, AZ, Tribe Called Quest...I loved that stuff. I didn't expect Japanese Hip-Hop to emulate their sound, I loved that gritty sound they have, it's a lot better than American Hip-Hop right now.

My question is that....how do Japanese people view these guys? Because we know that Hip-Hop has always been misunderstood in America. How do normal Japanese people look at this stuff....do they also play this stuff in their cars or is it just a small sub-culture? I can't imagine any of my Japanese friends listen to MSC Cru...but maybe they do...who knows.

I mean, can you play in front of your Japanese teacher and ask her to translate the lyrics, I mean would she be straight up disgusted at you?

How do Japanese people view this? Do they condemn it? Like it? Or think it's a straight up embarrasment?
