I'm certainly not denying the are offbeat as a mother (you know the rest), but it doesn't make it bad, necessarily.
I remember when Cunninglynguists did a track with an offbeat beat, and it was excellent.

Haha I know it's off topic but I couldn't resist, since people were still posting in this thread and I happened to read these forums lately...
If you are judging the album by the two tracks on the link, I encourage you to check out the whole album, as each track is very different and there might be some that you can relate to more.
This isn't really directed at vgambit, because obviously by their comments, they would prefer music where everything is perfectly on-beat, perfectly mixed, etc. For sure, many people in the country (world??) agree with this - I mean Nicki Minaj is NUMBER TWO (if this doesn't bother you, I don't really know what to say) on the U.S. Billboard Rap chart right now...
Drake's shit is perfectly on beat, perfectly mixed...he's been on the top ten for 28 weeks...
But even so, there are those among us that believe that, in fact, 'perfection' can be found in those tangible imperfections - however severe or slight - in music created in a modern world where computers and other technology allow anything to be mechanically, rigidly, perfect. Music, including hip-hop, is essentially human...removing all imperfection makes it too artificial and 'manufactured' sounding to me. After all... 猿も木から落ちる o_O
As for Tell You a Tale, it's not sampled we just played it on instruments, but glad that you like it Ryuujinn!
Anyways, sorry for hijacking the thread...you are now back to your regularly scheduled programming =)

vgambit wouldn't know dope if it spit the illest lines in their face, but I think they were just being harsh because of the off-topic self-promotion, as R27 said. ;p
I just noticed Shiba-Yankee has an album out? I wonder if it's all the same style as their appearances elsewhere.

@nest0r I learned to value beats over rhymes by listening to Group Home. If the beat is wack, I can't bother to listen to the lyrics. If the beat is good, then I don't mind the lyrics, though I can appreciate them.
@valymer I don't apply one rule that dictates the type of sound I like, but this list is a pretty good slice of my taste: http://goo.gl/IbbmJ

And it seems to result in a pretty common, popular cross-section of favourites. I like some of that stuff but to me it's mostly too generic sounding. You should try honing not just your listening when it comes to individual elements, but the pieces as wholes. Then you too can be a dope like me.

I love dope hip hop as much as the next guy but there is someone who I think you should check out. Shota Shimizu sings pretty soulful rnb stuff if youre looking to add some diversity to your playlist. His last album has a sick hip hop remix of his song called "home" but I couldnt find it on youtube.
Anyways, pretty interesting background.
"Before his debut, in November 2007, Shota sang in English on amateur night at the Apollo Theater. He was called a one in a million soul singer by a local newspaper in New York. The second time he performed at the Apollo Theater was November 19, 2008. He sang the song "Sukiyaki" by Kyu Sakamoto in Japanese, where he was given a standing ovation from an audience of fifteen hundred people. He said he sang it because he wanted to show his Japanese pride and demonstrate the beauty of the Japanese language.[3]"

In other news, this kinda made me laugh. After listening to the iTunes previews, Squash Squad's album is nowhere near the level of Soundtrack to the Bed Town.

Hi, I'm new here and I love j hip-hop and I was just wondering where you guys are finding all of your music? I for the life of me cannot find any good artists except when I happen to stumble across one through sheer luck.

Do you mean where do we actually obtain albums, etc from, or do you mean where do we find new artists names that we like?

I actually meant a little bit of both - where you guys finding the albums and how you guys finding out about more new artists. I've tried randomly listening to whatever I find but that doesn't seem to be working right now.

As for the other part of it - what I did in the beginning was download some random people, listen, and see what I liked. Then, I would search more people who worked with the ones that I liked and continue going like that. I would also research to see who was popular and well liked in Japan, and check them out too.
Finally, I started finding sites like nihon5rap.com that show a lot of new underground and independent artists (like AKLO, MoNDoH, klooz) and keep going with that.
So, good luck to you. Once you've found our hiding spot I'd recommend pretty much anything on there. It's all good.

Thanks a lot, Ryuujin27 - that's helpful. I'm looking forward to not having to wade through a ton of not-so-good artists now.

Anybody have a song that gets them motivated to get stuff done? Sometimes we all start slacking on our studies at some point, but there are songs that instantly get me back on track. This one never fails to do so:
I once knocked out 200 sentence reviews in one sitting listening to this song on a loop!

Gotta save the listening for the times when I need it for the real thing (reps
). Hime has also some really motivational stuff.
Unfortunately I have listened the most motivational stuff already 1000 times through so it doesn't work anymore.

or just loop the entire Hero The S.Z. album.
I also loop Seeda's 花と雨 album, or just put on anything by 般若.
