You are now all my friends.

Haha I salute you all for bringing the funny after 1070 尺.
Can't believe poor Heisig wanted us to think of a flute...

These had me cracking up in particular:

- That's not ice...it's my last drops and I'm *exhausted*! Wink.

- I can't *translate* the words my girl says as she is "playing the shakuhachi".

And for all you people marking every sexual reference as inappropriate: You now think of fellatio every time you read this Kanji. That's right, you're not pure anymore. We spoiled you.

I think there's a bit more sexual innuendo after #1070 for you to look forward to as well! Then one day, Daizumi, you'll get to actually do some of these things. After that, you may find that you no longer get so excited about their mere mention on the internet.

Here is the homework. Check the etymology of these kanjis: 色,士,喚,勉,壮.

damn, i swear i would've enjoyed RTK if only heisig had made an "adults only" version of his book. or atleast if i'd figured out that there was nothing wrong with using my own primitives :|

Haha touche.
For now I'll just stick to masturbating to 択.

That's why I have a long way to go in mastering Chinese. I would have read 色狼 as 'colored wolf', but apparently it's 'sex maniac' :-).

尺 is a pictograph of arm from elbow (口 at the top) to the tip of the fingers when the hand is spread (last stroke).

Thora was kind of a douche... ( I hate this kind of attitude - i.e. I'm more cool then you are)

Sexual connotations indeed help the memory, as correlating with famous people.

You're looking at it wrong.
I'm proud of getting so excited at the mere mention of something as simple as playing the shakuhachi on the internet, and take her post as a cautionary warning of the fulfillment of sexual desires leading to a gradual lessening of their enjoyment, causing you to spiral deeper and deeper into hardcore fetishism trying to squeeze out the next sexual thrill.

A warning well-heeded, Thora. Thanks!

[This replaces my tongue-in-cheek post - didn't want it taken seriously too. Rolleyes ]

Lighten up, Shamano. Daizumi already laughed and volleyed something back.

Daizumi's post wasn't crude or offensive, imo. The last bit taunting folks with different sensibilities seemed kind of pointless, though. But it made his more advanced* sexuality fair game for a bit of sarcasm. I figured he could handle it - and would get it - which he obviously did.

Stories that help us remember are good - sexual connotations or not. I didn't say otherwise.

edit: oops, and here I was trying to resist sarcasm :-)

My nemesis just called my sexuality 'advanced'. I think we can all agree that I officially won at the internet.

For some reason I remember better with the sexual connotations. I figured that might be universal but at this point I am willing to admit that it says something about my personality.

I think it's about time I go out there and buy myself a shakuhachi.

What...I meant buying the actual flute. You know, just to replace my dirty thoughts with the actual meanings. Why, what did you guys think I meant?

To riff on a common tangent...

I think it's mostly subjective criteria that suggests whether sexual stories are more memorable than other types. It's really a combination of elements that determine an effective story; for me, making a particular story or element of a story distinctive was more of a rare, specialized tool to help discriminate keywords or primitives, etc. Most important was how much effort I spent encoding a logical, meaningful, consistently associative story and combining it with writing the kanji once or twice.

By the way, there's a lot of interesting research with regards to the distinctiveness/bizarreness effect in mnemonics and suchlike, there are many caveats to the phenomenon...

Disentangling encoding versus retrieval explanations of the bizarreness effect - http://mc.psychonomic-journals.org/conte...0.full.pdf

Distinctiveness and memory book

Mental images in human cognition

Bizarreness as a nonessential variable in mnemonic imagery

Disruptive effects of bizarreness in free and cued recall

Personally, the only sexually related elements I recall from RTK was one I think Heisig suggested: 救 (Salvation) - Or perhaps it was all in my head, the S&M elements...

Lay off the brain pr0n for a little bit. Quantum entanglement as mnemonic imagery might get you worked up but if you include it in every story, semi-analogous differentia begin to merge into a single element. In essence, it all becomes a blur.

Are you translating my comments now? ;p (In other words, I just said that, except I think it's best to replace 'sex' or 'quantum entanglement' with 'x pr0n' or 'stuff that gets you worked up'.) Best to just leave that stuff for when you need something distinctive... personally I never found 'sex' useful for that, for me it was either something absurd and humourous, or a simple wordplay, or a concrete nuance located within the story imagery...

For me the number one thing I realized was that I cannot start by constructing a story around the elements. I have to close my eyes and start with the keyword, and see what pops up. After all, when you do the reviews you also start from the keyword.

Some stories are really cleverly constructed but have the keyword somewhere in the middle of it. This simply doesn't work for me. So if I want to maximize my memory efficiency, sometimes its sexual, weird, or politically incorrect. If I see 'swamp', I don't think of BJs, but if I see 'suck' I do. I am sorry, but I don't think of icecream or lolipops.

And to go back all the way to the beginning of this thread: I simply got a bit frustrated with people clicking on report button the moment they see something that is politically incorrect or a synonym for penis.

The whole point is that some people have different associations with keywords than others, and they post their story only for the benefit of others. I belief that report button shouldn't even be there. I mean, just because your story is racist doesn't mean you are. It simply means that for that particular keyword it was easy for you to remember that way.

Also there's a lot of non-native speakers out there (including myself) that have different associations with keywords than those of us who live in an English speaking country and are exposed to them a lot more. I'm not exposed to a lot of English, but right when I was around 'pick-up' I was reading the Game, a funny novel about a guy picking up women. So naturally when I saw the keyword 'pick-up', I had to create a story around picking up women simply because it served my memory. Others might think this means I'm a pervert, because they use the keyword daily for drycleaning or carkeys.
And to be fair, when I see 'exhaust' I don't think of BJs, I think of cars, so I had to create a story around that.

Tsumari, I am saying that if a story is really racist, it doesn't mean you are when it helps you remember a keyword. If a story is really perverted, it doesn't mean that you are a pervert if it helps you remember a kanji. Lastly, some reports don't even make sense. There's a few stories out there that create a story about opposing Obama policies and even those get reported, even though they do not contain racist or sexual themes.

Finally on a practical level it doesn't make sense either. I've seen some pretty gross/horrible stories out there with a bunch of reports but not deleted. So I guess nothing happens with the reports anyway.

That button should go.

End rant.

And even though I don't use the BJ stories I still think they're funny. In fact, I am giggling a little now. And that's the point of this thread, to tell you guys that you are now my friends.

@Daizumi, if you're interested, try searching the forum for 'reported' or something like that, we have a half dozen often lengthy threads about this topic. Lots of interesting perspectives and conclusions in those comments.

Hey Nestor, any interest in trading my 1 rude boy Shamano for your 1 rude boy Tobberoth? (I think I'd like to keep my nemesis Daizumi - growing fond of him.) Tongue
[added links for context]

Daizumi Wrote:I have to close my eyes and start with the keyword, and see what pops up.
This really works, doesn't it. Try to align what pops into your head with the intended keyword meaning though. I had to fix some associations later b/c I had used the wrong sense of the word.

Quote:...right when I was around 'pick-up' I was reading the Game, a funny novel about a guy picking up women.
拾う is also used in the sense of picking something up and taking it home: 犬を拾ってきた haha

Quote:I simply got a bit frustrated with people clicking on report button the moment they see something that is politically incorrect or a synonym for penis.
I wouldn't be too concerned about the reporting button. It isn't a tool to label users as perverts or racists. You can see there have been several discussions about it. The result is a kind of compromise.

*There is a filtering script available that automatically hides reported stories. So it's possible that some folks are marking stories so that those who have expressed a wish to avoid sex and violence can do so. (Learning with kids, etc.)

*People can email Fabrice if something is particularly egregious. I'm not sure we need an auto hide function.

*People can view and adjust their reported stories. I don't fix mine anymore.

Also, try to keep some perspective. Many of the stories in the shakuhachi examples involved fellatio, but only a few were reported. And some could easily have been reported for other reasons. It's a bit random.

For the most part, I think people exercise judgment as to which stories to make public and how to word them. Sex is kind of universal, so the issue is more about tact. Racist content, however, is harder to justify. Admittedly, it isn't always easy to agree on what constitutes a harmful stereotype, but I think it's enough if folks just err on the side of caution. People will survive without that one story. :-)

I am not sure if the stories should be bizzare at all times, as Heisig suggested to do. In fact, if I can see a simple and logical meaning in kanji I woild better stick to it, then trying to imagine some absurd images (for example, as Heisig suggested in 洗).
Bizarre stories are good, when there are few of them. If all of the stories are bizarre, the sense of bizarreness is lost.
