reading vs writing

#1
Just thinking out loud. As I'm doing a lot of reading these days I reckon my kanji knowledge (reading and recognition) is getting better. However, I have noticed that there are some kanji that when I read them I have to stop and think for a bit before the keyword pops up. Although often I get the 'vibe' pretty quickly, e.g. positive or negative connotation.

Then there are other kanji that are no problems as far as reading and understanding are concerned but when I come to review on the site, I have difficulty going from keyword to kanji, even though I might have been exposed to the particular character quite recently in a text.

Perhaps this is just a phase that one goes through as you get more familiar with the kanji. Any experienced hands got anything to say?

I think this will get better once you taper off the addition of new kanji to your repertoire. It's been mentioned before that adding new kanji adds new confusion due to similar keywords and forms, but if you keep an eye out for this and add to your stories to make them distinct, this problem begins to fade.

What I did for a while to combat the kanji->keyword situation: when I came across a kanji in my reading for which I couldn't recall the keyword and believed to be an RTK1 character, I would write it down in my notes, and once I had accumulated a bunch, I would look up their RTK number and review their story to make sure I had a solid image. This helped a lot. As for keyword->character, I think continued use of this site will help with that, and it may be the case that it will continue to be a problem as long as you are learning new kanji at a considerable rate. Nowadays I'm getting about a 5% failure rate overall, but today I did 219 reviews and failed only 3 cards. A sign of improvement.
