Lol I didn't know they had the story in the menu, thanks I'm gonna check it out. Ive also noticed that when i tune into the conversation i catch alot of things out. But this is an FF game that i was really looking forward to. Im scared to miss something important in the story.

So play it twice! That's my plan. Without doing what you are doing, I couldn't possibly catch everything... So I plan to study more, then go back later and do it all again.

Or at least, that -was- the plan... Then I found those cutscenes online with the subs intact, so I'll probably just watch through them instead.

I'd mirror the message of play it twice! God knows I'll go through it another time (maybe even 3 times!) and I'm pretty solid on what's happening and only need my dictionary when they start throwing around some of the military jargon.

A tip I'd give you that helped me a lot when I was doing heavy heavy immersion was that you HAVE TO forget about "getting the most" out of something. Doing that will cause you to lose interest in it every time, solely for the fact that it will take forever to get through something while figuring out every little detail. So don't worry about it. You're more than likely to get enough out of it to understand the plot, even if you don't catch everything.

Too true. When I was first trying to read manga, some friends and I picked apart a manga... Well, we picked apart the first page, anyhow. It took an hour, and by the end of it, nobody wanted to ever do it again.

To really, really get the most of out FF, I'll probably read a translation of the scenes, or watch the English ones once. Whether I rent the game and play through or just find it online, I dunno yet.

Haha, kreva removed "blazing fast" from their post. Using ANY website for lookups is painfully slow compared to a local (epwing) client, especially if it supports autolookup on clipboard change..

Yeah, maybe something else would be better suited for romaji and hiragana. I use the reading tutuor site in conjunction with the yahoo dictionary, and my electronic dictionary if I cannot get desired results, but as far as kanji goes, it usually springs up pleasant results and is quite convenient for pasting to the SRS. The J-J definitions also seem to be quite easy to understand. The cool thing is that there are so many dictionaries out there to suit peoples needs. This one happened to suit most of mine; to each their own.

For ppl using SRS anki or any other one in general. How effective is it to do readings-kanji(trying to remeber the kanji from memory-from the hiragana or katakana readings.)
I want to know if anyone has done this for the long-term(few months-a year maybe i guess). Is this effective in remebering the kanji from memory or should i stick with just the kanji-readings for helping me write the kanji from memory.
Personally when i'm doing the kanji-kana readings, nowadays i start writing majority of the time to get a feel for it. But recently once i read that AJATT post, it made me wonder about doing it vice versa, and to see if it is truly effective. Anyone care to share there experience on this? I want to know if it's effective in the long run, b/c this will be time-consuming. I average around 50sentences daily from kanji-kana readings. And it'll double if i do this kana-kanji. Adding up to 100. Anyhow can anyone help me out? Thanks for you're time!

Background: I'm almost positive I passed JLPT 1, however I generally don't read manga/watch tv/play video games, I spend most of my time reading academic Japanese and can pick up just about any 論文 or Essay and have no problems / don't need a dictionary .

I decided to pick up FF13 for old times sakes and the one thing that bothers me is

Most of the other characters I have no problem understanding every single thing that comes out of their lips, Sazh, from the vocab he uses I can understand him. But I can't work him out where he is coming from grammatically it seems to be a cross of Osaka/ slang and just whatever the makers feel like making him feel cool.

Can someone give me some academic way of breaking down his grammar?

If this above video is indicative of how he normally talks, it just sounds like he speaks stereotypically manly. The main things I noticed here were:
1. He uses な where some might use ね
2. He slurs あい sounds into ええ sounds (会えねえ)

So the american version of this game, won't have a japanese dubbed+subbed version of the game in it? If so then i guess i'll just import it or something. But it should, cuz it's blu-ray, so much extra space.

It won't because they are keeping the 360 and PS3 versions identical, and the 360 already takes 3 discs without the extra audio.

I think that answers your question, try reading manga or watching anime/dramas and you'll find tons of characters that talk like this. It's actually pretty simple and after a bit of exposure you'll get the hang of it.

lol Okay, that explains it then. I didn't have any more trouble with Sazh than the others, but I'm nowhere near JLPT1 level, so I was like 'How is this possible!?'

But I read a LOT of manga, and watch a lot of anime... So that makes sense.

Didn't buy it off amazon or play-asia. I was researching prices on those and ebay.ca It seems that i've only saved around 10-11$ for buying it on ebay.ca instead of the price on play-asia. Amazon the only downside is that it's going to cost alot for shipping+handling. My friend said he paid like 45$ for his shipping+handling not including the game, in-total for insurance as well. I bought it off ebay b/c it was cheap and reliable(yesss paypal!!!). I know ebay can be risky at times, but the price difference wasn't all that much that much. Only saved money on shipping basically. It would have cost me around 97-100$ for the game and shipping+handling(basic one for like 4$ but it'll take a while to come over here, like 5-10). So i saved a decent amount. Paying around 89$ isn't bad, but most i've ever spent on a game, I hope it's worth the money!

*Disregard this: I didn't even try to play them with VLC before I posted for some reason. I just used Quicktime (the default) and there was no sound.

yes just got ff13. And i'm loving this game! Graphics are jaw-breaking! Feels good to be able to understand majority of the tutorials in the game. Like 70-90% of it.

Heh. I just barely got the gist of the tutorials (and that much mainly because I've played all the other FF games) and it's still an amazing game. I understand enough of the speech (with JP subs) to understand the plot, too, though. Without that, I dunno how good it would be.
