Out of curiosity, how are broadcast ratings treated by companies in Japan, with regards to rescheduling, cancellations, funding, et cetera?

Specifically I'm referring to dorama, with the viewership ratings listed on the d-addicts wiki.

I'm not sure I understand the question. Wouldn't it be normal supply/demand, sponsors/viewer relations?

My apologies, I should have more explicitly stated that I am wondering what the 'criteria' is, what are the acceptable numbers, etc.

Oh okay, thanks. Wikipedia to the rescue again. Still no idea what it means when I look at the numbers at d-addicts though, when I wonder how successful/likely to be cancelled a show is (or rather, how unlikely it is that it'll receive another season).

Shouldn't it just be that the dramas with the best ratings are the ones that don't get cut and get to make more seasons? I thought that's how it works pretty much everywhere. Although it would be interesting if there were actual criteria/formulas used to determine whether a show gets to continue production.

Maybe there's more information on this available in Japanese? Oh, and you could also try asking on D-Addicts and other dorama forums. Or maybe try contacting one of the companies involved in collecting/publishing the viewership statistics for more information. I don't know if they'd actually tell you anything, but it can't hurt to ask, right?

I know of Regatta. It's a Japanese drama that had its episode # cut down b.c. the ratings were terrible. and they made up a verb from this drama: regaru

Yeah it's just that when I see the #s, I have no idea whether they're good or bad. I guess if I read enough Tokyograph articles I might be able to figure it out. (http://www.tokyograph.com/search?t=ratings)
