Whoa seriously? How many do you know now?
Kinda in the process of working that out actually but yes SERIOUSLY! Um well I finished KO2001 and that has 3000? I know that I know quite a few words that are outside of that and in the 4 days I've had my vocab deck i've put 260 words into it. If I can average minimum 30 new words a day i'll hit my goal of 15K and if I can get 50 words a day i'll hit 20K. That'll leave me with like 30mins - 1hr review a day on that deck. You could say it's like my mcdonalds, I'm lovin' it.

Goals for the 2011 are bring all the bits and pieces together and really achieve fluency.

2009:
I started learning Japanese in January. Found the AJATT site, and made it a goal to become fluent in 18 months.
Half-way through 2009:
Woke up from the AJATT dream, set some real goals.
Hoped by the end of the year I would be able to read short stories without much difficulty, and understand easy spoken Japanese.
Results:
I don't think I quite reached my goals, but I'm close, and pleased with my progress.

2010:
I think I will go insane if, by the end of 2010, I still cannot understand Dramas and Anime (at least 80%) without subtitles.
I want to bring up my vocab another notch, maybe +7000 (my calculator says that is about 19 words per day).
Oh yeah, and since I plan on visiting my relatives in Japan this year, I guess I should make speaking a goal, too. As of now, I can only utter random nouns, and verbs in the incorrect conjugation.

And as for my non-Japanese goals... maybe I should reconnect with the real world, I've been confined in my Japanese bubble for a while. I should start putting cards into Anki like "Call your mother", "Take a bath", "Blink"

My goals changed so many times during 2009 that I don't think I can really comment on that. I ended up in a different city, quitting my job to go back to school, deciding to major in Chinese and then go on to get a PhD in Chinese linguistics, etc., all in the space of a few months.

My language goals for 2010 are:

1. Be able to test into third year Chinese when I start uni in the fall
2. Be able to read a 漫畫 (Chinese "manga")
3. Be able to understand Chinese movies
4. Get started on Japanese. That will be my minor.

During Christmas break I plan on finishing RTK and RTH since I'm just working part time now and will have lots of free time. I'm blogging about that process here. I need to average 43 per day to finish by the time I'm back in school.

as of now

2010:

** read as many books as possible in Japanese. I mean bunko & tankoupon or tanponkou (i don't know this word lol). cause i'm at a level where i can learn a lot from reading books while doing the word or sentence mining.... probably words. I noticed sentence mining doens't really work well for me either (from that thread )

**up the japanese listening. I haven't been listening much they past few months since my mp3 player broke and i finally got a good replacement. I have to search for good podcasts/fast audio (lol... I just hate it.. like I make the yominuri news play 1.6x on windows media player so at this point yomiuri sounds SOOOOOOOO slow at 1x )
nhk-or-jp news stream is awesome Smile

I think news > music for effectiveness but I love my music. so it's sorta painful but I at least myself listen to music before i go to sleep

** finish rtk.

You know, I know I made some kind of 2009 resolution(s) related to Japanese study, but damned if I can remember them now. Shows how serious I am about New Years resolutions, eh?

One of the goals I made somewhere along the line was to be at or near JLPT3 level by Fall 09, which would have been roughly one year after I began my studies. I think I reached that goal satisfactorily, more or less, though I'm only going by skimming through past tests as a basis and my listening comprehension is still quite poor. Still, I'm comfortable with the vast majority of the JLPT3 kanji, vocab and (more recently) grammar, so it's nice to see some kind of progress having been made this year!

I ran into a rough spot in the summer, when things got stressful/busy and I was forced to put Japanese on the back burner for a few months. Momentum is a powerful thing, and when it runs dry, it can really take a lot of willpower to get it up and running again. In those few months (despite some immersion here and there), my Japanese knowledge suffered pretty severely - I was struggling to remember a great deal of the vocabulary I had picked up from Smart.fm and 2001KO, and was unable to produce many of the most simple and common kanji. It really sucked.

Luckily, I've been able to plug up those holes and regain a lot of that "lost" knowledge. Things are forgotten and relearned constantly in language acquisition, at any rate, but I feel like much of what I've relearned is now reinforced and (hopefully) won't be lost as easily.
I've restarted my Heisig reviews from scratch - currently up to about 1500! - and intend to stick with my daily reviews indefinitely this time rather than getting bored with it and stopping.

As for resolutions for 2010... well, prepping for JLPT2 by Fall seems like a logical progression and realistic goal at this rate. (Whether I'll actually take the test or not depends on where it'll be held... Was there a Texas location? I could probably do that.)
I intend to read a good deal of literature (Souseki, Dazai), play through loads of JRPGs and, my poor achin' hard drive willing, partake in much drama and anime.
I intend to keep my study methods simple and effective, not going overboard and burning myself out like I'm prone to do; no more canned sentences if I can help it, as little "bloat" in the process as possible.
I also intend to kick up my output a little, primarily with Lang-8 which, even from my very brief (and embarrassingly sloppy!) sessions, has been a remarkable help in discovering weak points.
And finally, and most importantly, I intend to keep my motivation up at all times, even when it all seems hopeless and pointless. Because when I'm motivated, baby, you betta move on out the way or you gon' get run ova'.

I think those are realistic (if inevitable) goals, anyway. Here's to a bitchin' 2010!

2009

Resolution: Wanted to get from beginner level to intermediate, and sit the JLPT2.
Result: Although I studied only on and off this year, around the beginning of December I started testing myself with JLPT2 papers and realized I was there in all the areas the exam tests. Took the exam the other week fairly confidently.

2010

Resolutions:

1) Get to a more advanced level; increase vocab to 8000, read more, and listen as much as I can.
2) Sit JLPT1 next December.
3) Not get overtaken in Japanese by my 3yr old. Wink

All this talk about word count here makes me wonder what mine is. I'm going to guess it's somewhere a little over 6,000. I want to know for sure though! Anyone know if Anki has a plugin that lets you see your total unique word count? That may help us all get a more solid idea.

My 2009 goal was to understand spoken Japanese and pass JLPT Lvl 1.
Uhm.. at least I hope I was able to do the latter. Wink

My 2010 goals.. Being able to read advanced material, e.g. scientific literature on various subjects. So far my vocabulary is pretty limited when it comes to economics and stuff. Wink

2009: started the Kanji in the first half of the year, but stopped after the tragic events of June 25th made my life come to a standstill. restarted the Kanji at the end of November.

2010: dedicate myself to the study of Japanese. Finish off this damned RtK1, Finish Tae Kim and Finish 2001: A Kanji Odyssey.

2009: Started seriously studying Japanese again in October. I've studied on and off for the last eight years (ages 15-23) and passively "marinated" in a lot of Japanese music and subtitled TV. Someone directed me to AJATT. It inspired me to try a new approach -- my old way was all textbooks and no fun, hence burning out over and over. Wading into immersion, I was glad to find that I could understand about 40% of easy shows (Pokemon) off the bat. I'm 1300 deep in RTK now.

2010: I'll be able to do Japanese nearly full time until May, but then I'm moving, getting married, and starting university (math major!). I'm only setting goals for the first five months, because I can't project beyond that:
- Finish RTK1 (January)
- Work through UBJG and 500 items of Core 2000 containing new vocabulary
- Wean off unnecessary English-language contact as much as possible (I had a brutal Internet surfing addiction, which I've crushed 75% so far), immerse as much as I can until I move

2009:
+ Finished Smart.fm Core 2000 and Core 6000. Useful, but boring.
+ Reached a total of 3500 cards in my Heisig deck. Useless, but fun.
+ Switched to Japanese keywords for most of my Heisig deck.
+ Started reading novels unaided.
+ Deleted my sentence deck.
+ Noticed improvements in my production skills while chatting.
+ Created a deck for names.
- Did not actually finish any novels yet.
- My listening comprehension is still awful.

2010:
May create a new sentence deck from scratch, or possibly a vocab deck.
Will read more manga and novels.
Will switch to Japanese keywords for the rest of my Heisig deck.
May add another 500 cards to said deck, for a total of 4000.
Will resume work on my listening comprehension.
May consider taking some level of JLPT.

2009 language-learning reflections:
1. What resolutions did you fulfill? (or are almost done fulfilling)
I finally started on my way to learning Japanese. This is quite a spontaneous stab at another language, but hey at least I still kept going with it. The fact that I'm still here trying to finish RTK is already a shock to myself when I started it in late September.

Will be finishing (hopefully) before New Year's.

2. Which ones did you not fulfill (or are hopeless at this point)? Do you plan to try again this year?

Not knowing how to read manga and novels yet. Probably kind of hopeless right now since there's a lot of vocabs that I need to brush up on. A LOT.

2010 resolutions:

1. What goals do you have planned for language-learning for the upcoming year?
Go through UBJG or Tae Kim after RtK.
Start bits and parts of AJATT.
Start mining sentences or words.

2. What goals in general aside from language learning do you have planned?
Finally transfer to a university in Taiwan.

Can't quite relate my progress to years, but.

2009: My goals were mainly to make sure I had many possible strategies for 'intermediate' and 'advanced' level self-study in place, and to finish the foundational stuff I'd been slacking on after finishing RTK. I managed to do all that, but not as fast as I'd have liked.

2010: 99% native media, and onward to 'fluency' in however long it takes.

YES! JxPlugin 2.0 can do this for you Smile

The previous version didn't work with sentences but it says this version does. I don't have a sentence deck anymore so I can't verify but it's working SUPERB for my vocab deck.

I'm really keen to know my exact vocab too so what I'm going to do when I have a few spare hours (more like days) is enter in every word that's missing and just suspend them because I know them so don't need review and I'll have a perfect running tally on my vocab Smile

This plugin is truly amazing, it tells you kanji and word stats for JLPT, Frequency and KanKen. You can also click links that show which words in there are in teh deck in total, which you've seen and which are in their corpus but not yet in your deck. Fan-*****-tastic.

My list:

2009
+ Finish RTK
- Finish KO2001

2010
Finish KO2001
Play through ファイナルファンタジーXIII
Read ヒカルの碁
Sub2Srs 時をかける少女 and カウボーイビバップ
Sit and hopefully pass JLPT2

I find that clear & well defined goals work best and have much higher probability of success. Did a similar list (not entirely language related) for 2009 and I've failed only 1 point: learning Spanish, too vaguely defined and a little bit too ambitious Big Grin

For some unknown reason that plugin completely ducks up Anki for me.. (I doubt it's because of the sentences though..)
Which sucks, because it'd be fun to see just how far I've come. The number of sentences is a pretty bad indicator I guess.

2009 Goals: I didn't really have any except finish my semester with all A's and do my best in Graduate school. This meant that I got A's in my Japanese classes (yay!) However, after finding this site and ajatt I got Heisig and I only have freaking 450 or so Kanji left. My goal is to be done before the New Year (probably not going to happen since I have a full time job that is pretty demanding, but lets try!)

2010:
obtain fluency.

Im not exactly sure how to do this yet, but I'll probably end up using my old textbooks/ tae kim to get the grammar and then sentence mine or something. I'm still debating.

finish RTK1 and 3 (If I haven't finished 1 by the new Year)

That's a shame.

I just checked it sentence wise with a dorama deck and it works perfectly for sentences too! I was actually really disappointed with earlier releases of it being completely broken (and I mean completely) when it was opened on a deck with senteces but they've really rounded it into a beautiful plugin that can track some very functional stats.

It can keep a good track on how many kanji you actually know how to read.
