That's awesome and encouraging that you're able to play and enjoy FF8--particularly because I think our levels of reading comprehension ability are in the same ballpark, if only because I noticed that we finished KO2001 and KM2 at around the same time. Makes me want to try playing through an old favorite in Japanese.

Speaking of which, this thread reminded me that my username comes from a minor character in FF9, even though that was never one of my favorites in the series (still pretty good though).

after pushing a boulder that winds up crushing an enemy soldier

"これで一石二鳥ってなもんよ。
やっぱ、すごいね、て~ん~さぁ~い~"

Is it just me or does the Japanese version rock so much more than the English one? It's just 10x more expressive! I really hear them speaking when I read rather than just reading it plainly in English.

Well, I just finally finished downloading and installing the games this morning from PSN Store (It took roughly two hours for each one to finish; something tells me the download speed is capped because I get downloads at least 5x as fast on the CPU). A 3,000 yen card can get you FF7 and FF8 (a very good deal in my opinion though I think the card is a bit on the expensive side). After the whole night to contemplate on which one I will go through first, I chose FF8 since I would like to finish Crisis Core sometime before playing through FF7 (and since CC is an adventure-oriented game, I could easily play it on the side). I have FF8 synced to my PSP now and am ready to get rollin'. Here's hoping I don't get stuck like the last time I played this game, which was a very long time ago and in English. Wish me luck! 日本語の為に! Smile

edit: downloading disc 2 now Tongue Startin on it tomoz. If it can teach me a further 88 words then that'll be 176 extra vocab Tongue 2x and I could have 350 new vocabulary just by playing my favourite game.

harhol Wrote:pSX is a much better PS1 emulator than ePSXe. I felt like playing MGS the other day, so I downloaded pSX for my Vista laptop and it worked immediately & flawlessly, without having to configure anything. I can't ever recall having a problem with it, actually, and I've used it for years.
It's definitely easier to setup, but that's where the advantages end. esxpe has OpenGL2 support (if you download Pete's OpenGL2 Plugin), and everything that gets rendered in real-time can be displayed in HD and enhanced with various texture options and shader effects. I started with pSX myself, but the difference is night and day. Check here for a few screens http://www.racketboy.com/retro/sony/ps1/...tings.html Naturally you need a half decent graph-card though (128MB and up).

It depends on what you want from a PS1 emulator. I have a CFW PSP, so the only time I need to use a PC emulator is when I play games which require R2 & L2, which tend to be short, action-oriented games like MGS, Resident Evil & Abe's Oddysee, in which case spending time tweaking the settings isn't really worth it. In other words, I prefer the idiot-proof accessibility of pSX.

However, I hadn't seen that cel-shading ePSXe plugin before...it looks awesome! But I wonder why they chose such a bizarre FF7 screenshot to show it off... perhaps it doesn't look that good all the time?

The cartoon shaders aren't great really, especially for the text. I just used one that made it look more defined. The only caps I have are here http://img267.imageshack.us/g/fullyd.jpg/ Naturally the backgrounds take a bit of a hit in 1920x1200, but the characters look awesome. It doesn't work so great for the likes of MGS, since the textures they use aren't upscaled or anything. Snake's mouth is just a pixelated black line. I should take some more caps of FF8, though. Monsters like the T-Rex look really good.

Just noticed the JPG compression has caused a lot of jaggies too. Everything is perfectly smooth in-game.

You know your Japanese studies have gone too far, if you seriously consider to SRS "dragoon".

Even the NES/Famicom isn't bad, if you don't mind the complete absence of kanji and incredibly oldskool gameplay! Actually, the occasional all kana game might be useful to break the habit of kanji reliance. I gotta get my fix, but I find myself ignoring kana a little too often. Dragon Quest 1 time, perhaps...

I still own one of those discolored, crusty things (though not as discolored as my puke-yellow SNES).

Has anyone started mining FF13 yet? I watched about 2 hours of it from the beginning from some guy broadcasting on justinTV today and it's killing me that I don't have it. I'm really thinking about importing a copy and mining it but to do so I would need a capture card and I would have to record the gameplay, then rewind and mine each sentence... Either that or I would have to point a webcam at my TV and record in crappy quality.

I wasn't concentrating on the subs too hard but they did seem accurate.

There are subs on everything except if they use a catchphrase or something during a battle. Also PS3 games are region free right?

Sweet! Yeah, you can learn some good slang from those games.

Yes.

You can get a capture card for under $30 (Dazzle). Well worth the money.

FF13 is currently £60 everywhere on eBay. This is the hardest decision I've ever had to make.

Hmm, all my games I have for my Super Famicom HAVE kanji in them. A few to name,
Chrono Trigger, FF5, FF6, Dragon Quest ( 1,2,3,5,6 ), and Romancing Saga 3. But yeah, PS1 is pretty sweet as well. The games are a lot cheaper to get compared to buying PS2 games in Japanese. I guess it depends on how rare the game is though. Now I will tell you what game I despise in Japanese. Pokemon. Ugh, it is all in KANA! >.< At least they had the common courtesy to add spaces between words...

SNES games generally have plenty of kanji, yeah (unless they're made for a younger audience) - I was referring to NES/Famicom games Tongue Some use kanji, but generally, the NES's resolution was too limited to display any. I agree about the spaces thing, though. Most of the games I've played in kana have had the decency to include spaces, but others seem intent on making us suffer.

Actually... if recent history is anything to go by, FF13 might plummet in price very soon. My reasoning is that recently, publishers have been severely overestimating the demand for huge name games (and charging a premium), producing an overabundance of units which end up finding their way to discount bins a few weeks later. Monster Hunter 3 was the most recent victim that comes to mind, I believe Dragon Quest 9 may have suffered a similar (if less severe) plight. Square Enix has recently boasted about the massive quantity of copies shipped, so you just might be in luck!

This is all nerd-radar conjecture of course, and whether you'll be able to import a copy on the cheap either way is iffy. I believe the game is selling for around 8000 yen presently (gee, I wonder why these big games end up not selling in this economy?), so maybe £60 is on the reasonable side after all.

This happens only for titles that are not really "huge" but rather overhyped, for real AAA titles this is not the case. Blizzard games are expensive at launch and for a long time they stay at that point, for any console "system seller" like Halo, Gears of War, MGS, God of War it's the same.

FFXIII is arguably the biggest game for PS3 platform and a major "system seller" (first custom PS3), I don't think its price will fall in a year or so.

Since there is no multi here there should be a bunch of used copies but only after their owners finish the game and that will take a while Smile
