I just set up Task Scheduler in Windows to start Anki on the hour every hour. This allows me to spread my study / reviews through the day and do more, increase efficiency and automate rather than studying in a single hour block during the day.
Sorry if this is a simple / obvious thing to you guys - but it would be my tip of the day for better study!

You shouldn't need to use Anki more than once a day. Any extra time you have is better spent on learning more material or doing other things in life.

I just skimmed your original message before replying, when I really should have read it properly. Sorry.
(there have been quite a few Anki users who see things like 'the next card will be due in 2 hours' and assume that time is the best, when in actual fact once a day is all that's necessary, and intervals have a 5% random factor applied anyway. I wrongly assumed your post was another case of that)

I have do anki sentence reviews in blocks several times per day. Most is four blocks, but there seems to always be the big block which is left for the evening. I found that mobile reviews of my sentences help decrease my load at night and allowed me to add more cards.

I started doing something similar. For example: say it would take me 20 minutes if I were to do all my reviews at once. I find it easier to timebox several 2 minute reviews throughout the day. I do my reps like 15-30 minutes apart. Which seems to work good for me, since I'm at my computer all day doing something like programming anyway.
If I have any failed cards, I see them more often by spacing my reps apart. I don't use the "Show failed cards early" option and my failed cards are spaced at least a half hour apart before I see them again.
I've found that I get bored if I do a bunch of reps all at once, so I refrain from doing that now.
This also seems to works good if I have a huge stack of cards to get through, normally due to neglect. ^_^;;

I have TED Notepad set to come up every 5 minutes, I put what time I choose to start my reviews on, that so I can't lie to myself when the time comes (I also use it for other stuff, like when to start homework and assignments amongst other things). So I guess it's similar to what you're doing, except more broad. >.>
