Wow, it's giving me stuff like 10000 and 16000 which is a lot more that I know, I'm sure.

i got 7000 which is a bit high for me (well, probably close if you count all the trivial stuff and 外来語). but then i felt humbled when i saw「小学生レベル: 5千~2万語」 @_@

edit:
test 1: 7000
test 2: 8900
test 3: 9800
so this thing isn't terribly precise (as one would suspect) nor accurate (overestimates).
but still fun Smile

I just focus on the grade level. It's impossible to get an exact estimate on someone's vocabulary.

@radical tyro

If you average those scores out you get around 8500 which might be closer to the real number. Strangely my highest score was on the first and my lowest on the last.

That thing is completely broken. An easy example is if I only tick the last Kanji, it tells me I know 33,900.

However, if you say you only know the last Kanji and also the first word too, apparently I only know 800. Less is more it seems!

あなたの語彙数は14300語です.

uh.. no. Same as with similar tests in English, the estimate is way too high.

I got 11100. That's way too much. Since most of the words I know are in my Anki deck, I already know my vocabulary isn't even half that number.

中学生レベル: 2万~4万語。

hmm good point. this is definitely odd behavior. *sigh*

Interesting but some of the words are very obscure. Also, I don't think it's very accurate considering the very small number of questions in regard to the total number of words tested (150/50000 = 0,3%).

Useless metric. Most lexicon estimators I've seen test you on way more words for better accuracy. Checking/unchecking one word changed my estimate by over 20,000 words.

Care to post a more accurate one?

There really is no accurate way to judge someone's vocabulary level; it's a big issue in linguistics (especially childhood language development).

I tried dividing the number by 2 (lowest) or 3 (highest) and got closer to my anki numbers.

They have a presentation page here: http://www.kecl.ntt.co.jp/mtg/goitokusei/intro.html

They seem to have fate in their own test and describe it as highly accurate: 精度の高い推定テストです. From a quick glance, it looks like they built a custom database and sorted words by familiarity and used that as a basis to create the test. They say it's better than taking words at random from a dictionary, which is what other tests apparently do.

Edit: Found another test here: https://www.miraisoudan.com/goi_estimate/index.html
Looks like it's aimed at children. Might be slightly more motivating. It's also created by NTT.

I urge all readers to please abide by this important recommendation before taking the test: かならず、先生(せんせい)やお父(とう)さん、お母(かあ)さんに相談(そうだん)してから始(はじ)めてね。

Nope, it's not working for me either.

I got my hopes up for the first one. Even if it's higher than my actual vocab level, it's still disheartening to see such a low number.

Test 1: 10200 (Yay!)
Test 2: 3600 (I didn't think so)
Test 3: 3500 (:|)

Yeah...I really don't read enough heh. On the upside, hey, I know 3,500 Japanese words. That's 3,500 more than I used to know.

I think it only works with Internet Explorer. Doesn't work in Firefox. Doesn't work with Chrome either. You might need to change the coding in IE. Right click -> coding -> Japanese (EUC).

Bleh. It figures. Thanks. Lucklily I just switched to it.

I still got pretty wild scores. On the lower levels I averaged about 3000, but when I did level 3-2 I got 9400. I wish. Sad

2nd test: あなたの語彙数は23200語です
3rd test: あなたの語彙数は29200語です

kids test:
lvl 1: あなたが知(し)っていることばの数(かず)は やく 9100 語(ご)だよ!
lvl 2-1: あなたが知(し)っていることばの数(かず)は やく 22200 語(ご)だよ!
lvl 3-1: あなたが知(し)っていることばの数(かず)は やく 53500 語(ご)だよ!

Yup, this second test is more b0rk3n than the first one.

Damn, they just won't let me do that test!

First one about 9000... second one about 10000 (accurate so far)... third one.. 25400... last one 41900. I ***** wish.

Also, thank you Keroro Gunsou for making me look up ポコペン
