Hiya people. There's something that has been bothering me for a little while. I started RTK1 just 2 weeks ago, so I'm still a couple of months too early to try KO2001. But what IS KO2001? There seems to be such secrecy around it, everybody is talking about it, but no clear explanation is provided. "Prove that you bought the book and you shall be provided with a link to ??? deck anki" whaaat? XD And what's the difference with smart.fm which seems to be already integrated to anki?

Smart.fm has only 200 sentences while KO2001 has over 3000. Fine. Ok, so suppose I buy the ebook from http://www.coscom.co.jp/ebook/e-2001kanji.html what next? How do I end up with KO2001 being in ANKI? And if I DO end up with it in anki, do I discard completely the ebook itself?

KO2001 is a series of two books also available as a CD-ROM e-bbok. This has nothing to do with Anki and they do not provide any Anki support whatsoever.

However, some people on this forum thought it would be cool to have the sentences from those books in Anki so they they went through the trouble of retyping them into Anki. Since they are nice people, they don't mind sharing the result of their work with others but it wouldn't be fair to the original KO2001 authors if they just gave it to anyone. There would be no need to buy the books anymore. This was solved by asking interested people to prove that they own the books before sending them the Anki file.

And by the way. smart.fm isn't really integrated with Anki but there is a plug-in to take the data available on smart.fm's site and create a deck from that. But as far as I know, smart.fm doesn't officially support Anki in any way either.

Ok, first of all Anki is an SRS, and it's supposed to help you remember what you already know. KK2k1 is a book as you have already figured, which is supposed to help you learn the use and pronounciation of the kanji in a given context. There's a thread here somewhere on the forum where someone did some experimental reordering of the sentences and a graph that shows the current ordering of the KO sentences.

smart.fm is the successor to iKnow (that's what they called themselves before smart.fm. (The Application iKnow is still availabe at smart.fm). They say they leverage lots of memory research into a SRS online platform. (e.g. like Anki, different methodology though I guess). This site (RevTK) is using a SRS too, the Leitner System. While Anki uses a modified SM2 (SuperMemo 2) Algorithm.

On smart.fm they provide a Core 2000 set. Which is supposed to be the Core 2000 words in Japanese, accompanied with example sentences. (there's a Core 6000 too, which is supposed to take Core 2000 even further)

PS: For the Anki integration: There's a Anki Plugin to download Lists from smart.fm. A KO2001 Deck is questionable, as my Minna No Nihongo Deck is. As they are based on copyrighted information, thus sharing such a deck will likely infringe copyright, unless -- well, I'm not a lawyer -- the person with whom the deck is shared does have the same rights to the material. (e.g. own the KO2001 book)

Thank you, well seems a bit clearer now. How do I find those "people" though? I mean I will buy ko2001 once I finish RTK1 but what next? Do I just create a topic asking for the files?

Also you say there are 2 books, but on their website you can actually just buy the e-book excluding Book 1 and 2 (or is it absolutely necessary to buy the e-book AND book 1/2 ? )

It's just a question of personal preferences, you can buy either the e-book or the printed books or both. The e-book has audio in addition of the written material and vocabulary (but not sample sentences) for an additional 1000 kanji. But it's also nice to have real books that can you can read anywhere.

Tae Kim and then KO2001. Seriously there's a point where you just gotta take the plunge. Good to see the OP is doing a little research.

It's weird I was sure I wrote somewhere that I will go through Kim Tae before Ko2001... Oh well, I think I edited too much the first entry ^^' Yep I'm planning to do just that, (in fact I already took a peek a few days ago ^^').
