I'm looking for a way to chop up audiobooks and misc. MP3 files into individual sentence clips. Does anyone recommended any free software for doing this? I'm on a Mac, but I have access to a PC if necessary. Thanks!

Audacity can do it, but the process can get a bit convoluted. Lots of cutting, pasting, etc. but I guess that's normal for any job like this. Oh, and it has a Mac version.

If you do use it, I recommend using the beta version (1.3.9) - it's all-around better.

I'm pretty sure there're some easier ways to do this though.

for the mac there is amadeus pro. It's the best tool around for audio editing, it only has a 30 day trial period though...
But I've been splitting and trimming audio files on mass with it. My use case was that kotoban section from the audiocassets, where a japanese speaker speaks each word after the other with little pauses in between. So I went cutting it apart and trimming each file's silence upfront at in the end.
You basically want to use the Selection > Generate Markers tool and the Sound > Split according to markers as well as a Batchprocess you can create from the File > Batch Process menu ... if you try to tackle the same problem I had.

Anyway, it's such a great tool it's definitely worth each penny.

You could use Audacity if you want to do it manually, but I think it might be faster to use subs2srs.

If you use aegisub to make "subtitles" for the audio book (It would only need to contain the timings).
Then use subs2srs with only audio clips turned on. Then you could just copy the mp3's made in the media folder.

That would probably be faster, but it's still fiddly.
