On another thread I found out that some American ps3 game discs have the Japanese verions built right in. To take advantage of this, simply go into your console settings and set the language to Japanese. You will have Japanese menus on your PS3 from this, and if the game has the Japanese verion on it, it will boot up just as someone with a Japanese PS3 will see it.

This makes perfect sense since they are on the same region coding making for one master disc instead of 2

Here is a list I am compiling and will update as we find more.

Which Japanese games have English version if the PS3 settings are in English? Could we have two lists? ^.^?

So far I know of only Little Big Planet. My Japanese version has full English menus if the system is in English.

I would assume this list would be the same, either the disc has both japanese AND english, or it has only japanese, or only english

The idea is that they are shipping the SAME disc out to both North America and Japan to save on the cost of creating 2 separate master discs ^_^

So if little big planet is fully playable in english from the japanese disc then I assume anyone that bought it in north america can play it in japanese.

Can anyone who has an american version of this double check it? I am sure that should be the way it works.

Oh and some Japanese games have the americain voice actors on it anyways even on the japanese version >< Kinda sucks when you want to play a japanese game but you take what you can

Soul Calibur JPN has English localization.
塊魂Tribute doesn't, which is a pain because the game is about 20% dialogue, and one of the characters talks almost entirely in katakana.

I would be a little upset if i didn't know this, imported a game, and it played in english instead of japanese and I had to change my console settings to find out i could have gone to wal-mart top buy it LOL

Little Big Planet, and my copy of FolksSoul, have multiple languages. I think the normal Japanese FolksSoul doesn't, but I borrowed it from a friend who got it somewhere in Taiwan.

I'll be buying Trusty Bell (cheap edition), Uncharted 1 (and Uncharted 2 if I like 1), so I can tell you about those later.

I generally like playing games in the language that I enjoy the most for that game (usually the original language), which is why I'm interested on a list that goes both ways. Also an interesting thing is in Japan some American games are very cheap. For example I saw Uncharted 2 for under 5000 yen (new), and at the used game stores I've seen some very cheap American games (2000~yen for Killzone, etc) next to expensive Japanese games.

P.S. Anybody know about Japan's edition of Fallout 3? Japanese Fallout 3 is only about 2000 here, so I might end up impulse buying it. The Game of the year edition comes out at the end of the year... but I need to save up for FF13!

I guess Europe is bucked in most cases..?

I have the Europe versions of these games and they work for me, so I don't think it's only American games that work like this.

Don't go for Demon's soul. The japanese game has full english audio, no option to change. Also the audio is awfull.

What's the status on Tekken 6? I'm thinking of buying the PAL version, but I'd really like Japanese text/voice! =)

So the text is japanese and audio english, even in original Japanese version dedicated for Japanese market?? Weird.

Japanese version of Modern Warfare (one, not the new one) is in English with Japanese subs. Two isn't out yet here so I don't know about that one yet.

This link has a pretty sizable list going. Also, later in that topic somebody said that Uncharted 2's Japanese version has Japanese and English on it, but the US version doesn't have Japanese, which seems odd. Sounds like there are exceptions to it working both ways.

Also, if anybody is interested in watching Blu-Rays in Japanese, I guess if you set your player to Japanese mode there are a bunch of American Blu-Rays that have a Japanese dub and subtitles. Here's a decent sized list.

I'm planning to try a lot of this stuff with netflix and gamefly soon. (Watching all of Lost in Japanese could be cool) Hopefully it works out well.

Really late reply but just a heads up. Don't use Uncharted 1 "too" much as a gauge to whether or not you should get 1 Very little from Uncharted 1 is brought back up in Uncharted 2, story-wise, usually just some jokes/nostalgia stuff.

Also, while I own both and have played through both multiple times, Uncharted 1 is a good game, but it has its flaws. IMO, Uncharted 2 is far superior and worth the buy even if 1 wasn't very impressive

Unless I'm doing something wrong, I can also confirm that American version of Uncharted 2 has zero Japanese on it. Has quite a few language options actually but not one for Japanese... >.< I run my PS3 in Japanese, and about the only thing it gives me is trophies in Japanese.

I guess not everyone here is bilingual so a word of caution: do not use English/American games translated to Japanese as a learning tool or point of reference, in fact don't use it at all.

I've had horrible experiences with localisation in my country and I avoid it at all costs. Games (and movies) are translated poorly and quickly with minimal budgets by people who are usually overworked and/or incompetent. Thats not the kind of Japanese you want to immerse yourself into, especially when there are many original Japanese games.

I have to agree here. Some of them are okay... but many are just horrible. You even hear Japanese complain about poor localization, just like you hear westerners complain about poor RPG localization.

Does anyone know if "FF13" and "Resident Evil 5" both have full Japanese versions (voice acting etc.) on the English game disk?

FF13 does not contain any Japanese whatsoever on the American disc based on what the internet has told me so far. Resident Evil 5/Biohazard has both the English and Japanese versions on the same disc however the voice is in English with the subtitles in Japanese.. all of the button actions and menus are in Japanese though... also including any "books" you find inside the game.

FF13's english voice acting is so horrible from what I've heard from trailers, at least after having played the japanese version :/.
Shame that they don't offer the japanese audo on the us discs, though sort of expected, since seeing that the xbox version needs 3 discs, the blueray must be stuffed full with the insane amount of content the game has.

PS3 version of Star Ocean 4 came out a little while ago and has full japanese... but it's no FFXIII, lol.

Ratchet and Clank tools of destruction has the Japanese version though a Crack in Time does not. Mobile Suit Gundam Crossfire also has the Japanese version though it won't be automatically selected you have to go to options and turn it on.
