Someone called qop123 is ripping the Japanese subs from the raw broadcast stream (using a 1seg tuner + something called Caption2Ass_mod1, I believe) and uploading the resulting subs to d-addicts. Hes doing this for a bunch of different shows:

I don't really think budget has anything to do with the quality of a show.

You can have "cheap crappy shows" and "expensive crap shows" and the only difference is that the producers of the "cheap crappy" shows were smart enough not to blow a ton of cash...... :-)

There's something strangely appealing about low budget-ness and cheap-ness though... It just wouldn't be the same...

Lets not get all defensive just because we're studying Japanese.

Japanese shows are, in general, about the equivalent in production of American soap operas and the acting is right around that level, too.

There's a few exceptions, but by and large Japanese shows are quite inferior to western television in production quality, acting, and writing. Also in general, recently (last 15 years) American television has really ramped up the quality (and budgets) of tv shows, giving a new definition to "television drama." Japanese audiences are still quite satisfied with the older television drama format, so this hasn't happened here at all.

Anyways, budget does matter as it's much easier to hire good writers and actors with a better budget. This is pretty obvious, I imagine...but not every show can be some kind of underground hit success packed full of undiscovered raw talent.

I'm saying this after watching, I dunno, a few hundred hours of awful, awful Japanese dramas. That said, after a while you get used to it. And the fact that you're trying really hard to understand what's going on usually means you get WAY more involved in the story than you probably should be, considering the quality. heh... and it's great studying and a good way to get fairly natural audio (I wouldn't say that Japanese melodramatic television shows are completely "natural" though. heh).


Back on subject: WOO! It's been a while since I checked that site, gonna go download a bunch more awful shows to fill my days with.

While it is true that a lot of Japanese tv is crap, I would argue that the percentage of American television that is crap is far larger. America has way more networks making way more shows; however, there are only a few shows that I like. As a matter of fact, I like more Japanese shows than American shows.

I'm gonna have to agree with that one.

Sometimes low-budget can mean cheesiness in a really funny way. Often, I think low-budget shows have to come to grips with the fact that they simply don't have as many money as they would like to have. So they have to be a little more inventive and efficient in terms of story, characters, set design, etc.

I don't know if it's coincidence, but low-budget shows often seemed more traditional and conservative(in the Japanese sense). Big budget shows often feel like Hollywood, whereas low-budget feels more like "the family next door". Ultimately, I think both approaches contrast each other very well.

Right now, I'm watching the an Asadora (called "Tsubasa") and I really dig the "ghetto-ness" of the acting, story, and setting. Also, I think low-budget can often mean "simpler", which often means the dialogue is simpler and easier to understand. The 15 minute-episodes are so easy to digest even though it's in Japanese without subtitles.

On the other hand, prime-time TV dramas in Japanese will often just leave me totally confused (especially when they get overly technical).

Perhaps if you guys understood japanese better you would find them more fun.

I don't understand the appeal of dramas or soap operas. I have enough drama in my life. I don't want to keep track of some fictional character's problems.

You cannot consider the possibility that your Japanese isn't perfect and that if you could understand everything you would see subplots, story and characters arcs, the words that weren't used (the unstated)? Oh well...

For example "Ryuusei no Kizuna [Japanese Subs] (Ep01-10) (Complete)" and the 結婚できない男 subs are not in Japanese, it´s probably Chinese. Am I doing something wrong, or what?
I´m just a bit frustrated since I really wanted to see some shows with j-subs, only to get Chinese ones... (Ok, I´m not completely sure if they´re Chinese, since I know absolutely nothing about Chinese, except kanji, hehe! =))

Are you sure you have your media player to use the right character encoding? Probably UTF-8 or SHIFT-JS

I´m pretty sure - I have the first season of Hana Yori Dango working very well with Japanese subs. It´s just that I find it very strange that several of the D-addicts Japanese subtitles aren´t working, but like I said, maybe I´m doing something wrong. I don´t know what, if that´s the case... I´m not getting weird webdings symbols, I get kanji (just not Japanese, hehe)

結婚できない男 doesnt have any japanese subs as far as I can see, but Ryuusei no Kizuna definitely does (I've watched Ryuusei with J-subs and I'm sentence-picking it).
If you use media player classic or mplayer the subs should work.

BTW, Maou is another good revenge drama like Ryuusei no Kizuna, except much more heavy on the revenge part + Japanese subs are available.

Zorlee, what kind of subs do you have for hana yori dango? Is it srt/ass/ssa text subs or vobsubs? Vobsubs are basically pictures so they're not like the text based ones.

Wow! I almost feel like SRSing text from drama scripts is a holy grail.
All of the words are actually spoken(so it's perfect for learning
conversational Japanese).

Using OpenOffice, I've found a way to import srt files and convert them to a 2-column PDF.

NOTE: I couldn't take a screenshot of the full page since it's more than one screen.
A full drama comes to about 30-40 pages of single sided 2-column text (or 15-20 pages
double-sided). I left the timings and subtitle numbers untouched. File size is roughly 200KB.

So now we have near perfect subtitles for native japanese conversation!
And 30-40 pages is a good size. Not too big. Not too small. I could definitely
see myself reading drama scripts in my spare time.

The screenshot from above is 1280x885, but it includes the screen borders.
So I'd imagine that the size is PERFECT for an Amazon Kindle DX (which is 1280x800).

You can even copy/paste text from the PDF.

How do you know which subs are new and which aren't in the subtitle index? I don't know why some of the entries are bolded and some aren't =/

Is there an English srt for Ohitorisama?

Replace the "2009" in the URL with another year for past dramas.
Just look for series without any subs in order to find the untranslated dramas.
