For sale: Remembering the Kanji vol.1

#1
If anyone is interested in a copy of RTK vol.1 4th edition, let me know.

I was going to put it on eBay but can't be bothered with the admin procedure. Also as I'm in Japan, my preference is to sell it to someone in Japan...I think there is less hastle that way.

The way I would want to go about it would be to have the money transferred into my bank account, then I would send the book to the buyer.

I paid $42 + postage from the US for it. Apparently a copy went for about $90 on eBay recently. I like to think I'm not a mercenary...at the same time I ain't just going to give it away. I'm thinking round about 6,000 yen as that should give me a clear 5,000 yen to take the missus out for dinner and cover the courier charge.

Condition-wise, it isn't exactly mint condition but there's nothing wrong with it. In all honesty, I would say it is good condition (by that I mean that there's no 'dog ears' and all pages are properly attached). The spine is still hard with no major creases. It's basically a book that someone (me) has read/used.

I really don't want to be a jerk here, but I feel like any potential buyers should know that RTK V.1 is scheduled for a new edition from the publisher in May. Of course, come may, it could still cost 5000 yen for you. This one is available to you now if you're in Japan, and that has significant benefits.

And really Synewave. Selling a used book for full price? Even if it is out of stock, that's not very classy.

Thanks for your feedback JimmySeal. The point is, for someone that wants the book now, it's quite a good deal.

You yourself posted to the Where to Find volume 1 thread saying

I'm sure there are quite a few of us that are happy to sell our RTK1s to people who are after them. All I'm doing is putting an offer out there.

And really...as far as class is concerned, what were you thinking when you posted this?

I just want to make it clear that I support the sale of this book to people who need it. Sure, it's not altruistic, but it's better than nothing.

I can't believe the book has been this scarce. I had to go to the edge of the Earth to get mine, and that was 6 months ago. Is this still a problem? What happened? Did the book get super popoular all of a sudden?

Any idea when RTK III might get a new addition? I have the PDF version but would really like to have the book. However, I am not quite willing to shell out $150 for it (I think that was about the price on Amazon). Surely they must be planning to print some more sometime soon! At least I hope so.

I was thinking that people who are here just to goof off and not to actually learn don't belong here. And it appears that as soon as Mr. Fabrice changed the member list format, the person to whom I was referring magically stopped reviewing so in all likelihood I was right.

As far as the book sale goes, I just don't think it's right to take advantage of someone in need and capitalize off of a scarcity. Especially on a site like this. I think that the scarcity will make it easier for you to find a buyer, but that's not a reason to sell it at an unfair price, but you do what you like.

It doesn't appear that there are any plans to reprint volume III, probably because there isn't enough demand for it. The PDF version is littered mistakes and (hopefully) they would put in some serious editing if they were to make a print version, and that would require time and work that probably wouldn't be profitable for the book makers.

But maybe if this site and its users generate enough interest in Heisig, that situation will change. Who knows?

Well done. Even though you're dissing me for simply offering a book for sale, I'm sure we should be able to agree that studying is the main thing. Perhaps the person you are referring to is just having a break...who knows. Or as you stated, you could be right.

This is where I'm coming from. As the book won't be widely available till May. If someone has to have it now then they can get mine, or someone else's if they are willing to sell it.

We'll just have to disagree on this. I feel 6000 yen is a fair price. If you disagree, don't buy it! Or you could offer yours up for what you consider a non-unfair price.

Cheers,

I contacted the University of Hawaii Press two weeks ago, and they confirmed that they are planning to republish RTK III in late Summer 2007.

Really! That is good news. Will have to try and pick up a copy in late summer then. Thanks for checking up on that one. Appreciate it.

Dang, I didn't know the book was this rare or this expensive: I picked it up in a used bookstore a few months back for around $30.

Once I'm done with RTK I, I'm sure I won't have similar luck with finding the other two volumes, but I'll handle that when that comes along.
