Wow at the amount of English comments on Japanese youtube

#1
I keep trying to search for stuff in Japanese only and every japanese video I have found (or almost everyone) has one or more English comments along the line of (I don't understand but looks cool).

I find this amazing. And I have searched some pretty obscure stuff. Most of the time the only comments are from foreigners.

Anyone else have the same experience when surfing youtube?

Well the only time I do look at japanese stuff on youtube is for music videos, and I am surprised that people listen to the same obscure post-rock shoegaze stuff I do. I mean it's hard to find some of this stuff and sometimes the only comments are english. But really, most of the time I'm just on ニコニコ instead of youtube.

(off topic)

Are there any good Japanese shoegaze bands? That sound is due for a major comeback. I guess shoegaze still exists but I don't know if it's re-attained the heights of the early 90s with MBV, Medicine, Ride's first 2 albums, etc

From my experience, most Japanese comedy videos (which is what I watch on youtube most of the time) have tons of "Subs?" "Please Sub!" "Would be funnier with subs" "Subs plz!!" "English?!?" comments while I hardly ever saw any of these when watching German videos... how come?

I'm not sure if it's as good as that of the 90's, since I was still in the womb during a quarter of that decade, and listened to pop up till 2000, but I definitely think there are some really good bands out there. Check out http://japshare.wordpress.com It has more of the obscure stuff, and usually where I get most of my japanese music. You can usually just paste a band name into youtube find a few songs to listen to before you download (hence my comment on english comments.(heh i used comments twice and now an aside inside an aside awesome.)).

Yeah, that is pretty annoying. Even moreso when it's someone's youtube vlog and the comments are begging for English.

It's still better than a few years ago when any Japanese/non-English video was met with comments of "Get the ***** off youtube with your foreign shit".

Isn't the "Japanese youtube" really just the same youtube everybody uses with a Japanese interface?

For the most part yeah, but in Japanese mode it has a tendency to show you more Japanese content in the "related videos" "recommended videos" etc sections.

If you want all Japanese, try nicovideo instead.

The Japanese Youtube is just http://www.youtube.com, it isn't any different than regular Youtube. I am a primarily English speaking guy, but I know how to type "Hayate no Gotoku!" in Japanese. You find videos you're interested in and comment "This video is great!" in English. It's not so hard to understand. There are a lot of Japanese pop culture fans out there.

Most of the time, in my experience, the comments are a mix of Japanese and English.
