On the topic of Linux, I once was able to recover data from a hard drive that wouldn't boot up into Windows (or Linux, for that matter) by using a live CD such as Knoppix or an Ubuntu installation disc. You might try that.

First thing came to my mind was the cooling fan, but I'm not a PC expert so I'm not sure. mafried sounds like the pro here so memory could indeed be the problem.
Whatever the case may be, your OS on the hard disk is shot due to defragging. I would pull out the hard disk, bring it to the nearest COMP USA or something like that, and tell the guys there that I want to connect it to a PC through USB. The USB connecter thing should only cost $50 or so I think.
Once you recover the date to your netbook (or find out you can't), you can put back the HD and re-install the OS.
P.S.
Real men use AS400

I don't think Japanese version and English version use different keys. You can still call them I think.

Memory failures are often a symptom of overheating, which is why i mentioned it, and may indeed be the root cause here. If it's not the hard drive (run drive fitness test to see), then leave memtest86 running overnight and through the following day (important) on the machine. It may not fail right away, but after quite a few hours it will reach an equilibrium temperature. Then it's just a matter of giving it time for any overheating problems to show up before you rule that out as an option.

its not an oem windows. i bought it straight out for like 200 bucks or so at sofmap.
i ended up finding a solution. i installed windows and with the new hardrive i installeed everything is working fine. catching up on ankki reps right now which is an absolute nightmare (there are soo many), but after that i will try and retrieve my stuff off the old harddrive then run diagnostics to see if it is messed up. if so i am sending it back to western digital to fix before i return to japan.

It shows you're not overcompensating.
However, I should let you know... フフフ is a very feminine type of laugh. But that's cool though... if that's how you role. Some chicks like the androgynous thing. ^^
