In RTK heisig recommends that you also see the mnemonic story along with the word to help you remember the kanji. However i've noticed that on this site, its simply the trigger word that shows up. Is the story recommended? and is it even possible?

Seems you could do either way, doesn't matter too much.
Remember, RtK is a crutch to get you familiar with kanji and put you leaps and bounds over other methods by allowing you to write them right from memory.
But that's all it does.

You cant on this site, you'll have to do your reviews in Anki if you'd want that.
Whether you should display the stories or not is debatable.
Khatzumoto say's it isn't cheating, though I personally feel it is.
I dont have any problems whatsoever remembering the primitives.
So if I see a story on a card, I can just get the primitives out of it and write them down accordingly - effectively it would be the same for me as just purely telling me the stroke order.
I dont create or rely on any mental images / stories that way
However if I don't display the stories, and just the keywords (like on this site), I have to actively recall a kanji image/story. That way the images just stick a lot better - at least for me.
But there are people prefering the other way around as well, so in the end it comes down to what works best for YOU.
If you are in doubt of what works better, I'd suggest you try out both ways - I did so too. Just don't grade them on your retention rate, as that will probably be better WITH the stories included. Whatever method makes you remember kanji better OUTSIDE the SRS enviroment works the best for you. After all, we are learning Japanese so we want to be able to use these kanji outside the SRS, not in it
