This game is going to rock!

Why?
Is it in some way useful to learn Japanese with? Or do you just like the look/concept of the game?

Because in either way I don't understand why I should be excited about it...

Did you look at the website? have you ever played a game book? have you ever played one in Japanese? It's like reading a book, with the added excitement of 1) new and unusual kanji 2) chances to read and re-read when you die (which = reviews) and 3) keeping things fresh by "choosing your own adventures". I couldn't care less about how it looks (although it does look sweet-is that a contradiction?), but I have enjoyed reading game books in japanese for some time now. It's a great way to breaking into reading novels.....

If you've played game books before, how would you rate the difficulty? Compared to, say, a light novel, or a regular novel?

I used to like gamebooks as a kid but I have never played one in Japanese. What are they called over there? Are they mostly Japanese originals or are they translations of the old classics? Any suggestions on where to get started (some titles, collections?)

By gamebooks do you mean "Choose your Own Adventure" books? Oh man I used to be addicted to the Fighting Fantasy books - Trial of the Champions, Deathtrap Dungeon, The Warlock of Firetop Mountain...

No idea how that would work on a DS though - how would you keep your thumb on the page, so you can cheat and go back to change your choices?

I have this problem with imaginary coin tosses. Keeps coming up 51-49 out of my favour. Time to re-read 'Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead'.

bwhahaha me too. It never crossed my mind to actually use a real dice.

I always used to turn to the losing page to see what when you lost the dice roll...the death scenarios were fun...

The Warlock of Firetop Mountain.... brings back plenty of memories

OK thanks for the explanation. I did look at the site, but after seeing the movie i sort of lost interest. Not the kind of thing I like. If I want to read a good story, I read an actual book. If I want to play a game, well, I don't like games with too much stories, especially since they usually just get in the way of playing the game. Good were the days where you could start playing a new game within 5 minutes..

Guess it's cool if you like that kind of genre.

..and broccoli is the same in Dutch too, it's quite healthy. I like to steam it.

Most I have played are a bit difficult. After going thru KO2001 book one I was more or less able to enjoy them (almost done with book 2 and its a lot eaiser). They are great fun for discovering new kanji and learning how to describe actions and people.



The Warlock of Firetop Mountain translations is pretty easy to start with though

They are called game books or ゲーム　ノベル

There are some originals as well as translations of Steve jacksons' books.　Check out amazon.jp.

I reccomend 魔人竜生誕。

No, here by game book I mean the old fighting fantasy style books (many are translatted into japanese.)

Have you played the free homebrew "LONE WOLF" game book on Nintendo DS? It works great! (but yeah, no cheating....)

I have that in Japanaese! Actually, a simple one to start of with pages/paragraphs are short....

I got this game and it is pretty great. Good reading pratice and fun.
