I've created a page for Google Wave http://rtkwiki.koohii.com/wiki/Google_wave , Not sure where to link it from though, front page?

Edit: created a page for kanjistroke too, I'll leave the wavedict page to you bombpersons.

Good job!

I forgot I updated the Guidelines page yesterday and some more today.

Image size is important! Consider that a single 400KB PNG image is already bigger than the gzipped SQL backup of the Wiki text content as it is today.

I've added a link to the Wiki community box, for the time being, since it's more of a community feature. Perhaps later put the RevTK google wave directly on that area, and the Google wave page, which has more Google wave uses information, into one of the other sections.. maybe in Guides? It's not exactly a language learning website, but we could have a few howto's like how to setup one of these robots (I have no idea Smile)

I noticed in the guidelines we're advised not to use .png, I've already uploaded .png format screenshots for both Kanjistroke and KeyHoleTV, should I compress these down to jpg, they're both ~60kb

Nah, that's great if you can save them efficiently. I'll have to rephrase some of these, but I have to leave now. 60kb is very good for image size.

meolox added the James Heisig page, if anyone is curious about the man.

There's so much information on this website, and it is a shame that so little of it is on the Wiki. I think we should restart this collaboration effort and brainstorm things that should be added.

After the brainstorm session, we can then decide where/how to add the info.

First, I think brainstorming some general categories to go on the home wiki page would be valuable. That way we don't clutter up the main page.

Once we have the general categories figured out, we could provide a brief description for each website/resource in that category's page, and of course make it all formatted and pretty once we get everything organized.

Here are some categories (along with some websites) that we could add:

Learning Japanese Section

Japanese Grammar

Japanese Reading Practice
http://forum.koohii.com/showthread.php?tid=8005

Kanji and Kana Section
Japanese Language Proficiency Tests (I'm not entirely sure why this section is under "Kanji and Kana", obviously it has to do with them, but maybe it would be better to put under Learning Japanese?)

JLPT Resources
http://www.jlpt-kanji.com/list_all.php
http://www.tanos.co.uk/jlpt/
http://www.jlptstudy.com/

Other Methods to Learn Kanji (Alternatives to RTK)
Traditional Kanji Memorization By Learning Radicals First
Movie Method
Kanji Damage

As a reminder, here are the guidelines for the wiki/how to edit:

I agree. I will be willing to give some of my time. I think that some pages for the frequently asked questions on the forum would be good. Like I just finished RTK; what do I do now?. Another thing I think would be helpful is to expand the Anki page. Maybe with a list of useful plug-ins and card models.

Note, I think it is hard to get most people here to also think about contributing to the wiki. MediaWiki is hard to learn and people don't want to switch between two web sites. but maybe if we can get a few more regular contributors it could work well.

I want to help. I started adding a little to the wiki last year, but it ran out in the sand, mostly because I didn't know where to start.

People can still help by digging up threads with information that would be good to have on the wiki.

About the categories, I think we should have one category for proficiency tests where we can put information about JLPT, Kanji Kantei, BJT, EJU, etc..

@Pauline. Right now there is a brief page for Japanese Language Proficiency Tests (it's under kanji/kana though....which doesn't make much sense to me), we could just add some more information to it. Right now it just lists the major tests. I definitely think it needs more information.

@Boy.Pockets: I like your ideas. And I also think it will be difficult to get people to participate. However, this is something that we can do a little at a time; we don't need to stress about getting it done quickly. I don't know much about wiki formatting but I browsed through the instructions and it doesn't look too difficult. It's not like we need to use fancy templates or anything. I think most of it will be some text and links.

I guess so, but it will be more fun if we can get a critical mass of people editing, so it just keeps on rolling. But maybe this community is a bit too small for that. We not only need people who are willing to contribute, but willing to contribute in wiki format. That is a small cross section me thinks.

Anyway, let's do it. I just saw your post http://forum.koohii.com/showthread.php?p...#pid141298

Awesome. That should go up on the wiki asap :).

Thanks Oniichan and Boy.pockets! It would be awesome and fun if we get more people to contribute. I'm glad you liked my list. I can start reformatting it to put on the wiki. Not exactly sure where to put it yet.

Maybe one of the things we can do to make it easy for people to help is to write out a template and then people just put a title, link, description, etc. and then we just have to copy and paste into the wiki.

----------------
E.g. (this is pseudo-code, not wiki-code)

I think these resources belong in the "blah" section.

[[Short Title | Descriptive Title]]
[[Link]]
[[Description]]

----------------
Then they don't have to worry about the actual coding part and people would be able to contribute resources they think are helpful. So our focus would be "Hey, what resources have been helpful to you and should be on the wiki?" instead of "Help us update the wiki" which is more intimidating.

I created a Chinese-related page in the RtKWiki that can be of interest, called Chinese Resources, which consists of an aggregation of some things that were suggested in the RevHanzi subforum and some other websites, in a more organized form, plus a list containing a few popular websites from China that I liked — useful for those who don't know where to start. Here it is:
http://rtkwiki.koohii.com/wiki/Chinese_Resources

I thought about adding a table entitled 'Chinese' to the main page, in order for the Chinese stuff to have an entry point — is it ok? I'm asking this because of what is said in there: "please discuss changes to the front page structure first in the forum!" Perhaps it could be placed at the bottom so that it doesn't disrupt the Wiki's focus on the Japanese language. Or is there a plan to create a Chinese-specific wiki?

Since nobody opposed to it, I've added to the front page the Chinese table I mentioned. The rationale is that there seems to be a reasonable interest in Chinese in the community, so it makes sense to have something about it too. There are already two, I might say, very elaborate pages that I've added:

Chinese Resources (the one I mentioned before)
Remembering the Hanzi - Simplification Tables (new one)

I don't think it's that hard — it took me like 2 minutes to learn everything I needed to, starting from zero. I think maybe what happens is that people here don't contribute to the wiki simply because:

• There aren't more people contributing to the wiki (one of those cognitive biases we are so fond of);
• It's easier to react/respond to messages than to create a page from scratch;
• They don't know there is a wiki;
• They have to create another account in order to post there, as it is not integrated to the forum;
• They think nobody will read it (which might be true; that's where advertising enters).

Or some similar reason. In my case I knew there was a wiki but I never thought about using it until now.

There was a huge increase in spamming on the wiki in the last few days — the more popular it becomes, the more undesired and unrelated content is posted in there. Maybe now a few more trusty 'moderators' who are able to delete pages and block users is necessary.

I've taken to moving spam pages to Spam Page 1, 2, 3, etc., and spam bots to Spam Bot 1, 2, 3, etc, as well as erasing their entries.

Sorry about that. I don't have many tools for managing the Wiki. Documentation is so confusing too. Best I could find was some wonkey php script that can erase all entries from a given user. Still have to do lots of SQL querries to locate said user.

If you know of a good MediaWiki plugin that would let admin and mods set IP range bans that would be best. IP Range ban on this forum is 3 numbers. This is usually safe because most SPAM comes from outside Europe and US. Some from China but not so much. Most is from Eastern Europe, Russia, India. It's very unlikely that legitimate users are caught in a IP range ban with 3 numbers.

gdaxeman and nest0r should be Administrator now.

Even though I probably know less about wiki formatting than you.
