I'm testing MediaWiki on the local environment.
I really like the presentation of Wikipedia, and would prefer to use something that everybody knows. Although for the RevTK Wiki I will certainly customize its looks.
Right now I'm learning the editing syntax, also tried to enable upload of images but can't get it to work yet.

Is the wiki Wikipedia use and MediaWiki different? It doesn't matter too much, at the moment it would be too hard to just copy and paste everything.

Yep, MediaWiki is the package that was originally made for Wikipedia.
There's only 20 or so pages at the moment on http://rtk.wikia.com/wiki/ AFAIK. I think the wiki markup is exactly the same.

Awesome, the RevTK wiki is just installed over here:
http://rtkwiki.koohii.com/wiki/Main_Page
For now, I have disabled edits by anonymous users, but enabled account creation for all.
Please try to register with your forum username, it makes it easier to synch with discussions on forum about who edits what or plans to edit what on the Wiki.
Yes, it's just the bare installation, and I didn't even edit the logo! I figured I'd put it up asap instead of waiting forever. Don't worry, it'll be fun to edit the theme and customize the wiki, you can see my todo list on the front page, feel free to add to it
This will be a work in progress anyway, I have myself to learn a lot about wiki markup, etc!
But the important point is it's there, and you can start using it!
From now on, let's publish all kanji lists and such on the wiki, and link from the forum. That way, you can edit the complete lists. I'll have to install extensions like PDF Export to see how useful it could be. But that's the idea, those lists should be exportable. It is also possible to export wiki pages to a nice PDF document to read offline for example, so your work there is not limited to an online wiki!
Once a theme is ready, and we have some content, and I am feeling more confident using the gazillion wiki options.. I'll make a proper announcement of course on the main site!
Oh, and I'm a maniac, I will most likely do lots of edit on the FRONT page, to try to get something nice. Eg. a tabular layout (something like http://wiki.guildwars.com ). So don't worry too much about the front page looks for now.
Have fun!

Added section on certification tests. Who will be the first to get 一級 in all of them?
http://rtkwiki.koohii.com/wiki/Tests
Also added a list of Joyo Kanji. It's just a verbatim copy of wikipedia's page but wikipedia allows that if you credit them, which I did.

Meh, my school decided to block the wiki for some reason =( Oh well, I'll just use my proxy server =)

One issue we should decide on very soon is which romanization method to use. I have already seen three different variants of Hepburn on the wiki. For example using 常用漢字:
* Jōyō kanji (traditional and revised, considered standard)
* Joyo kanji (de facto on signs)
* Jouyou kanji (kana spelling)
At least no one seems to use Nihon-shiki and Kunrei-shiki, but we should still be consistent. If only to decide which of them that all other variants should redirect to.

For general use, I prefer kana spelling. It isn't a lossy romanization (like toyo or tooyoo), it is close to english pronunciation (unlike kunreishiki), and it is easy to type (unlike tōyō).
Other systems do have their uses. When I write papers on Japanese linguistics I use kunreishiki since it has a 1:1 relationship with the kana. I also use it when I type since it uses fewer keystrokes. I use modified Hepburn when I translate because it is a lot better looking and is the standard for business etc.

Importing (converting) content to Wikipedia (MediaWiki) format
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_t....29_format
@Jarvik7: I'm in favour of kana spelling, in the name of "accessiblity" for lack of better word: I think it will be easier for beginner Japanese learners to understand. ?
I'd like for the wiki to keep the beginner learners in mind, even if there are advanced topics. We should not assume the Japanese level of the RevTK wiki visitors.
I've added a few sections on the front page. It doesn't look good, I'll create a design for it. But feel free to add sections and organize the top links on the front page!
Taking inspiration from the http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki front page layout, here is a few sections and their icons that come to mind:
* Community links : abbreviations used on the wiki and forum, wiki guidelines
* Learning Japanese : various methods (often links to Tools below)
* Tools : RevTK, Anki, sub2srs etc. (tool-specific pages)
* Written Japanese : RTK book + links to reviews, installing the fonts, inputting japanese on Windows/Mac, ...
* Multipedia (dvd / music icon) : lists of audio and video for Japanese learners, top links on front page, and a link to full index (More) (have to see how categories work for this)
* Japan (flag?) : maybe some articles about tips from those who live in Japan and want to study there etc, not to replace wikitravel of course, focused on learning the language over there
* Kanji Lists (data sheet icon) : jlpt, jouyou, rtk, plus many others we've shared here before.
Please feel free to edit those categories, add more, eventually we need to simplify to a grid of 6-9 top sections like on the guildwars link above.
Create YOUR own little comfy page on RevTK Wiki!
Also, for those hesitating to join, note that once you create your wiki account, you have your own user page! Simply click your username on the top right (should be red), then create/edit your own page! You can use it to test MediaWiki markup if you're too shy to commit to existing pages, and this is great also for those who sometimes wanted to "blog" on here about their progress. It's your page, so have fun, but remember those pages are PUBLIC.
Discussions about the wiki itself
I would prefer to continue here for now because I have no idea how the MediaWiki discussion pages work. But eventually we should move over wiki dev. discussions there.

Look at post above there are many tools to import data that may help.

There could be a way to sort the kana for the readings (あ・い・う・え・お), but I don't know how to go about that.
Also, I used kana spelling for the readings since they need to be specified better, but I think we might want to move to kana spelling for all articles for consistency and for lack of confusion.

I vote for kana spelling.

Since this is aimed at people learning Japanese, I think kana spelling would be best also.

Have you decided on a licensing scheme? Perhaps you could just use the same license as Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:T...ed_License

Quote:inputting japanese on Windows/MacI wrote this page for Mac, it lacks pictures but I'll try to take a few snapshots when I have some time: http://rtkwiki.koohii.com/wiki/Switch_Ma...o_Japanese (it covers the language of the system, and the input methods with your fingers and stuff...)
A real question now: can I safely import an article I wrote on http://rtk.wikia.com ? (from a "copyright" point of view)
Oh, and it seems that I have a new answering machine: http://rtkwiki.koohii.com/wiki/User_talk:Mypapa12

Gentlemen, start y... err, I mean, refresh your wiki home page.
Still a lot of work to do..
Okay the idea is that I have posted a proposition for the front page layout. All major sections and most visited pages can go there.
Please feel free to reorganize links a bit, but don't make major structural changes to this page.
Let's discuss the structural changes, such as improving the organization of sections, in here.
Time for bed. (v_v)
