So... no matter what I do any subtitle file I try to use with VLC player doesn't render any subs at all.

Any ideas? I think they are .ssa format. I've tried various things...

Subs work for me with media player classic with no problems (except wrong timing sometimes GRR!) but the problem I have is this... If I have an MKV file which is dual audio with the default option of being english then media player classic can only play the english audio. Thus ruining the point of watching the video.

What do I do?

VLC is horrible. Get this instead and use zoomplayer:

I don't know Zoomplayer, so I can't say anything about it, but I strongly recommend you to give KMP a try.

From Wikipedia's KMP article:

just in case anyone still wants to use VLC:
vlc won't find the subs if the path to the sub file (or the name) contains any non ascii characters (unless you change your locale to japanese, or so they say, i never tried it). so, if you want subs to render properly, you have to change the names of the files and/or the folders they're at.

then again, i second everyone's advice, cccp with zoomplayer would be best.

If they are in ssa/ass format, you need to convert them. Easiest way is to open them in firefox and then go to view->character encoding and choose unicode, and save the file. It should work after that.

Zoomplayers working just fine now. Big bonus that it's easy enough to retime the subs! I mean, media player classic could do that but only one damn line at a time. Now I can watch DN with subs. woot.

for me zoom player never worked out because there's not enough optiosn andsometimes there was no video.

kmpalyer doesn't show the fonts of the subs while media player classic does.
Kmplayer's really good because you can shift the subs if they don't match or convert it if the framerate doesn't match (doesn't afefct subtitle file, just while playing it), you can shift the audio if it doesn't match, there's filters to improve the video. there's so many options on it.
