Please help me get started with Smart.FM.

Why would you even want to take the sentences from smart.fm and stick them into an srs when they are basically already in an srs format? I think you will drive yourself crazy if you have the same exact sentence in two different places you study. At least I did, I think its better to just take the sentences they give you and study them there at smart.fm and if you want more practice with the vocabulary find a sentence from another source with that word in it and then stick it in you srs. That way you can see the same word in a different context. Just a thought though.

So I've decided to use smart.fm. Here's the page(link later) I'm using is it the correct one right? Now where it says start I'm supposed to use the iKnow button right? I went through the first lesson of 10 items and currently have like 28% next to them on my study page.
link~ http://smart.fm/series/3318

Here's my main concern, when do I actually add the sentences to my SRS? Have I learned them well enough just after this overview? Next question is if I have the right idea of how to enter them into SRS. Is this right?

Going with 見る first sentence...

Question: 私は絵を見るのが好きです。
Answer: わたし は え を みる の が すき です

And as long as I can pronounce and know the word I get the card right correct? Also which side would I have the audio?

Thank you.

I myself don't actually use the iKnow function, but I would say add them to your SRS the day after you study them, and review them then also.

Also, depending on how you want to study, you might want to study each word in the sentence, and learn all of them in one go. It's tough in the beginning but definitely worth it in the long run. An option to make it easier would be to maybe add 3 cards for a sentence with 3 new words, and highlight a different word in each card.

Also, I would have the audio in the "answer" section, or you'd end up just hearing the audio to get the readings.

Actually, I have a question about this too. I download the sound files and the deck of Japanese Core 2000 and 6000 from the iKnow thread. However, it always plays the sounds during the question part, rather than the answer part. How do I make Anki play the sounds during the answer part instead?

If you go into deck options, select the card type you're using, and click edit, and then click template it'll show you what's shown on each side of the card. Simply cut the part that's labeled "audio" or "sound" or something and paste it on the answer side of the card.

I'll keep that in mind sup3rbon, thanks. So am I right in what I'll be putting on the Question and Answer sides or not? I think it's correct for recognition?

Thanks, worked like a charm.

Yeah, that's correct for recognition.

Ah also, another useful thing you'll probably want to get is the japanese reading plugin you can download via anki. Basically if you put something with kanji into the question field, it'll automatically generate a reading in the reading field. Very useful, and also it formats it so it keeps the kanji there and just puts furigana above of them, which makes it about a billion times easier to read, in my opinion at least. I can't stand reading things just written in hiragana.

Don't bother downloading each sentence by hand, theres a really useful smart.fm importer for anki. Just go to file -> download -> shared plugins and download the smart.fm importer. Then go to tool -> smart.fm Importer . Then all you have to do is paste in the list URL and set up the options how you like and it will download the audio and import the cards directly into anki.

I see your point. Would you recommend not doing studying at smart.fm in favor of just putting them in the SRS or what?

Smart.fm isn't really that good of an SRS. Anki is far better, and putting the cards into anki instead means that you have all of your cards in one place.

Because once you've completed a large number of items iKnow becomes a weird juggling game. The 250 limit on items means lots and lots of lists to deal with. Importing into Anki means one or two list that you can customize however you like. They say they're working on a way to make studying more customizeable on the site, though, that's been on the list to do for a whiiiiiile.

I've been importing smart.fm core 2000 sentences into Anki for a while now. I review from Audio->Kanji/Kana Sentence. I think this is quite powerful. First, listening becomes a primary skill, and second, I've found that reading skill naturally develops as you are recalling the sentence.

Is anyone doing this? I see most people going from Sentence->Reading/Audio.

Hmm. Listening -> Kanji/Kana? When do you fail a card, if you can't picture the kanji? Also how do you test your reading ability, do you read from outside sources and stuff?

With the 2000 series I got the standard sentence recognition card to mature status.
Now I do...

front: Image, kana-word, audio-sentence
back: kanji-sentence

I write out the kanji before flipping the card.

With the Core 6000 I've been trying out many things. Right now I'm doing recognition like above but also I'm trying to train my ear to recognize the vocabulary word. So I do...

front: kanji-target/vocab, Kanji-sentence
back: kana-sentence, audio-sentence

front: audio-vocab
back: audio sentence, hidden kanji

I try to write out the kanji like with the 2000 series.

I don't use terms like sentence, expression, etc, for labels as I tend to get confused after a while.

Well if you can download everything into Anki from smart.fm as easily as bompersons says you can then I see no reason to really use smart.fm at all. Except maybe for the dictation option.
