I'm trying to find a solution to making better use of "dead time" - basically time when I'm not around my computer and can be doing SRS reps. This would have to be some sort of device that can run Anki, as that's how I manage my sentences and Kanji. Netbooks seemed like a good idea at first, but they aren't so compact that I would always carry one around with me. I guess something like a smart phone is an option, but it would be kind of a waste to pay monthly fees for it when all I want to do is review.
What all do you guys use?

Your other option then is to buy an iPod touch. You can run AnkiMini on it (or iAnki) and review on the go, and won't have to pay a monthly telephone bill for it.

If you can afford it, iPhone 3Gs is a great option.
3G will work everywhere (rather than wifi, which will only
work if you are near a wifi hotspot that you can logon to).
It's very liberating.
AnkiMini and other SRS programs are available for the iphone.
I went the ipod touch route to avoid paying for a phone plan,
but it didn't work out so well.
In practice, I've found that wifi isn't the best thing, since
so many wireless access points are password-protected
these days. And the unprotected access points are very slow
since so many people are on them.
Yes, paying for a monthly plan isn't the best. But if you get
rid of your current phone, it'll only end up being 20 to 30 bucks more
a month.
SRS goes through the roof once you're able to SRS anywhere, anytime.
So maybe you should reconsider.
Anyway, hope this helps.

chamcham: Why do you need access at all, other than when you are syncing.. I just make sure my ipod is synced up before I leave the house, and then sync again when I come home if I did any reviews.

Buying a netbook changed my life. Before I bought one I didn't think I would take it around with me everyday but now that is exactly what I do because it is just that incredibly useful. All of my Japanese studying is now contained on it and nothing else. I don't have to worry about syncing up or any of that and can easily add material where ever I might happen to be.
In Anki reviewing mode my Asus 1000HE gets almost 9hrs of constant use before needing a charge which means I can use it all day long with ease (which I do every single day). It's awesome.

iPhone/iPod Touch (and maybe Android phones with iAnki but I haven't tried it) are great due to the very handy size. If you don't need something so handy then something like an EEE PC sounds good.

I would like to have a really good mobile solution too. I bought an ipod touch for just this reason, and to be fair the ipod touch is much better than the original ipod. iAnki is ok on the ipod touch, but ... it's not great as it relies on your Anki server's ip (the ip on the network of the computer running Anki) remaining constant. Sometimes that ip can change for reasons beyond your control and that means you lose all your iAnki reviews (happend to me when I had 400 reviews on my ipod). Ankimini looks better, but you need to jailbreak your ipod with a firmware under 3.0 and it seems that for 2g ipods, which are all that are currently sold, that is a total pain in the arse; I've not spent much time trying, but I've not managed to get the 2.2.1 firmware cracked on my 2g ipod touch (any help would be much appreciated).
I have a Toshiba R500 portege laptop that I use when I want to SRS on the move and it's pretty good; it weighs under a kilo and I can get 7 hours battery life on it if I switch the WIFI off, so it's very practical, and I can get audio on it, also with hibernation it can be ready in no time at all, but still it is nowhere near as good as a handheld device if you are on the move.
