after no less than 8 repetitions the infamous endless eight Haruhi arc is finally over....

I procured the 日本語 novels of this series last year but never read them, but after hearing about this I'll probably skip the anime and just read them instead. I'm too much of a completionist to not watch the entire arc once I get started w/ the second season of the anime, so I'll save myself the trouble and not get started. ;p

I never really understood Haruhi's popularity. I like the first season, to an extent, but found half of the characters (especially Haruhi) to be incredibly irritating and grating. If it weren't for Kyon's witty narration and enjoyably cynical personality, I wouldn't have made it even halfway through.
Considering the ridiculous "marketing" stunts and BS they've pulled, and considering the likes of K-ON they're up against, well uhh...

Are the books any different, at all? I know they're popular with the JLPT2~ crew, but if I have to put up with Haruhi's annoying hyperactiveness or Mikuru being molested every 5 minutes one more time, I think I'd rather fornicate with a juicer.

I watched the first season but I didn't get why is was so hyped. What's so good about it? Am I missing something?

as for the reasons I can t speak for others but as far far as I m concerned I just love the pitch ....com'on : a high school grader near god entity not aware of his god like status that strives for alien , time traveler and ESPer and gathers a club made of the very beings she is looking for ? with a highly cynical narrator that is just about depressed by the situation as haruhi is exuberant ? time travel, space battle, mystery murder , baseball match , world on the eve of destruction once a week since the mood of god is highly unstable ?

after having suffered loads of bleach , naruto , satan 666 ,and other dragon ball rip off shonen , after mass media coverage of impressively unoriginal harry potter , twilight , Stars Wars 2nd trilogy ,.... you cannot but admit it s extremely original .What s more there is this "je ne sais quoi" the kind of magic you find when you read calvin and hobbes : spotless innocence of childhood imagination . But it would nt be the first time that a story doesnt live to its pitch . Whatever happens , I just began the lightnovels , the pitch is first rate.

From what I understand? There's a time loop going on. In the books, they just tell you about the final loop and how they break it. But the past 6(?) episodes of the new season were the time loop. The exact same episode, but animated and voiced slightly differently. Basically, they were trolling the fanbase.

and they ll get what they deserve .... since according to a poll about 67 percents of fans won t buy the DVD....they had it coming. 自業自得 as vincent says (what surprises me is what the f.... think the 33 percent left? )
now the marketing boss must be scratching his eyes out about what kind of goodies bundled with the DVD could avoid this commercial disaster....

I agree with this. However, the only thing I lament about the whole Endless Eight ordeal is that, if the new season is the same length as the first, that means there are really only 5 new episodes of Haruhi Suzumiya So, in reality, they won't be giving us a new season of Haruhi Suzumiya; they'll have given us less than have of a season when fans were expecting a whole new season like the first.

That s why fans are pissed off....
because this is already the end of the so call season 2 : watch the 2nd hitler video....

if it was a 52 episodes seasons I think most of us would have cast away their misgivings and hailed it as something extremely original , another proof of haruhi uniqueness bla bla...
But the fact remains that we have waited 3 years for watching 8 times the same episode and that there is a risk we won t have anything else as the exact lenght of the 2nd season isnt very clear ....

Well, the hype had to have come from somewhere. And, as far as I can tell, it came from people who genuinely enjoyed the first season (like me). I have fond memories of watching it with friends in High School.

The first season was great, and the new episodes of the seconds were good too, until they started airing Endless Eight. The idea behind endless eight is cool and original, but they really exaggerated. Two episodes (maybe the second one showing many repetitions of the pattern in quick succession) would have been pure win.

As to why Haruhi is great, I think it's because it looks, at a first glance, like a normal and already-seen high school comedy, but it's actually something completely different and mysterious. One problem with it, imo, is that the characters are too few.

Haruhi doesn't even develop the very few characters it has (especially Itsuki). It's really just Kyon and Haruhi as it is. No particular reason to go add more characters unless it actually fleshes out the ones it already has.

It may have been inappropriate considering the average audience, but the experimentalism of the director should be praised, imo. Let's say he should just stop doing anime and start working on movies.

I don't know...seems to me like the endless eight is the perfect AJATT immersion opportunity. I mean I know that I replay shows over and over in my immersion environment, so this sounds perfect... You'd probably be close to understanding the dialogue by the time you'd watched the last one

I guess I do have a fairly high tolerance for boredom and repetition, though.

why don t you go watch empire ? 8 f.... hours to watch empire state building or Cure for Insomnia that lasts something like 87 hours ... Both are among the most avant guarde movie ever .... :

EDIT : I got your point but still consider that a season of haruhi doesn t last more than 12 episodes and I would nt be surprised if it was even less .

Seems like an utter FU to their to their fanbase to me. Disrespect to the utmost degree. I never watched the series. I probably never will.

Still....They could have animated monkeys playing tennis at the beach. They could have had the world end for no reason umpteen times. The could even make the character do stupid things to stupid music like other shows do to fill shit in.

Kazelee, you are so lucky! You can watch the series and skip episodes 13-18 without having to wait 7 weeks! I dare suggest you do so, the series is good

Never said they were random, though, that would have made more sense. Were it not for diligent fans like yourself, the sponsors could actually sue for something like this. But I guess they somehow managed to drag in enough viewership while doing this to avoid the consequences.

I'm not the lucky one, their animation studio is.
