Possible Problem with Recall

#1
Hello all,

I think that I may be having a problem, but then again I may not be, so any insight would be great.

Currently I’m at frame 214, using Anki and adding about 20 new Kanji a day. At the end of each study session I review the new cards, writing out the Kanji before looking at the answer. I then add any new characters to a Kanji chart I’m making. Throughout the day I review Anki online during my breaks and lunch at work.

The issue I’m having though, if it even is an issue, is when I try to quiz myself outside of Anki. I will say to myself, “How many Kanji do I know that use “fire” in them,” or “How many Kanji do I know that use “shellfish” in them.” Suddenly I draw a blank. It’s as if I know one or two…or possibly even none. When I review through Anki though, using the keyword on the front and the Kanji on the back, I have a recall rate of nearly 100%.

Should I be able to recall more Kanji just based off of memory, or should I simply not worry about this, as I seem to be able to recall them when prompted with a keyword?

Don't worry about it, your only 214 in so far. As you progress they get more and more ingrained into your brain and by the time you finish you should be able to do things like that no problem.

Though, I wouldn't worry too much about recall, once you start sentences you mostly forget english keywords and stories. You just.. know them.

Don´t worry about that! =)
You´re doing fine - just keep up the good work, and don´t stress! You´ll hit the sign of the snake before you know it!!

Thanks for the encouragment.

"Sign of the Snake?" - Wha?

Is it a crooked "s" looking symbol? When I'm attempting to recognize the characters I've learned for the day on Asahi Shimbun I always see some snake looking thing combined with characters that I already know. It's encouraging to see it though, because when a new character I know is comprised of something new paird with things I already know it's cool to think of how easy Kanji really is.

Ah...

Well I look forward to the Sign of the Snake. Bring it on. Hopefully I will be able to work in my own personal story for the Kanji because I just so happen to have a Sign of the Snake on my left hand in the form of a scar from a snake that took a bite out of me when I was little.
