I have mixed emotions. There is a part that says that the forum is a distraction. An excuse not to be studying Japanese. Procrastination. etc.
The other part realizes that I'm a wanderer on a journey. It only makes sense to take advantage of the experiences of other travelers. So, I come to the forum to see what insights I'm missing.
Sum total is that I learn stuff about this site, and other sites, and life in general from the postings of the members. You.
Thanks for sharing.

Somtimes I have spent too much time here and start thinking "man everyone is just so hardcore on Japanese, *****, I'd better not slow down or I'll be left in the dust."
Then I talk to normal japanese students in the real world and sigh in relief.
Almost all of the Japanese study sites I have in my bookmarks I learned about from users here. I might be spending $500 each on Pimsleur courses getting nowhere if it weren't for this forum.

This is by far the best site on learning Japanese I know of. My first attempt at RevTK was not good. It was only when I started using the site that I was able to finally complete it.
Then there's the forum. I can safely say that I always learn something new every time I come on here (which is a lot - probably too much but that's another story). Most of the Japanese learning sites I use have been from this forum. If it wasn't for the forum I wouldnt be using Anki. I don't post much but I get a hell of a lot from all the great suggestions. Thanks a lot to everyone who has helped me.
So basically it's just a great forum.

I came here via ajatt originally to use the review SRS....I think it was a few months before I even checked out this forum. I really had never used or been active on forums ever before. I was surprised to learn a great deal about self study, linked resources, etc. (ya'll peoples is serious about this shit!). This really helped me refine my 勉強 in many many ways (and ongoing).
After a while, I found myself checking the forum all the time....kind of got addicted LOL! The high motivation, genuine friendliness/intelligence, and often instant responses to posts is excellent. It is really cool to be able to discuss J studies with people from all over the world who are well educated about self study, and having a few bad-asses (fluent /advanced and native 日本人)who always pop in to help is invaluable!
The thing I personally like the most is having people to relate to. People who are doing the same thing as me, and who share my passion for this language. I don't know a single person in my daily life who I can discuss this with, from a basis of knowing what I know about it. Yes I can tell people about it, but they really don't know where I'm coming from. Some people are interested in it. Others try to tell me how to learn language with passed on information that I know is not nearly as evolved as what I've learned here. It can be a bit lonely on the path of self study, but by coming here I can connect to a real community. It's also interesting to the layman sociologist/psychologist in me to observe peoples internet personalities.....you kind of get to "know" people over time.
It will definitely be interesting to see other peoples progression over time too.
....and there's the procrastination.............
