Japanese Game Method

I'd recommend non-RPG DS games to start out with, if you're not so great at Japanese yet. I recently played through Mario vs. DK2 and am finishing up Yoshi's Story DS. There's not a ton of text, but enough to keep you on your toes. I end up mining stuff from the games and their instruction manuals. I'm guessing any action-oriented Nintendo-made game is going to be good for starting out on. I'll probably give Phantom Hourglass a go next.

Plus, playing through anything Mario-related will ensure that the word 土管 sticks. lol.

I've recently started playing the visual novel 真恋姫無双. The game is as big as 7GB, not b/c of the game play or the picture, but because of the voice acting.

Some of the phrases or words may not be useful for everyday conversation (since it is about the history of three kingdom), but it has TONS of dialogs with VOICE acting.

If you don't enjoy the H scene, you can gracefully skip it with a push of a button.
