This is something I've thought of now and then and it seems like such a simple thing it's strange I haven't found it.
I want a function that will record the audio currently playing - as in, the same as what I hear in the headphones - while I hold down a hotkey, saving it as a separate file in a folder as soon as I let go of the hotkey.

That's all I want. I dunno if it's some very basic thing I've missed, because it's so strange I've never seen such a program or even a request for it. I wouldn't mind a bit shoddy quality or oversized audio files either just as long as it works. It'd be a great tool, so please m(_ _)m

I'd say use Audacity and you just have to set your "recording device" to "stereo mix" and it will record exactly whats coming through the headphones/speakers and you can save it as an mp3 file...

It's a free program and very small to DL.

You can do this with windows sounds recorder, too. Not as many options as audacity though

If you have a Mac http://www.rogueamoeba.com/audiohijackpro/ is the business. No need to buy it either unless you want to record clips of over 10 minutes.

Cool...downloaded Audacity, but can't seem to figure out how to switch the "recording device" to "stereo mix". Would you walk me through it? Is it "Core Audio: Built in Input"?

I was puzzled at first too but it's actually a case of "so simple it's hard". You choose stereo mix (or "wave out" as it can apparently be called too) in the dropdown menu that's right there in the middle of the main screen, to the right of the volume settings.

Thanks a lot guys! But there's still one thing I'm missing - I only said "hotkey" in my first post but what I really meant was global hotkeys. I've tried googling and checking the audacity homepage but I didn't really find anything. So is there a solution for that as well? If Audacity doesn't have support for global hotkeys, maybe there's a plug-in or a separate program that could help?
