Relatively simple Japanese shows?

#1
Well, last year I tried to do a similar thing which really helped, but after starting college again after the holidays I completely slacked off from Japanese. Thus, I start again.

Over the course of the summer I'm planning to watch one episode of something each morning before or after I SRS. Something I'd be able to watch raw without too much trouble would be good. Last year I watched Pokemon but this year I'd really like to watch something else, to be fair. However, something on the same level or at least similar would be great. Nothing like Doraemon though, I really didn't like that : | (sorry!)

So, could anyone recommend me something?

How about Dragon Ball or Dragon Ball Z? You said you watched Pokemon, so DBZ is probably around that same level of difficulty.

How about sailor moon or prince of tennis?

As general rule drama is easier than anime. However the only stuff I know is quite difficult.

Anytime I've tried, I've never been able to find Prince of Tennis raw. If it's available somewhere I'd love to know where.

Finding RAW anime is almost impossible anyway (expect for saiya-man, but that's just the latest stuff). What you can hope for is a really well made fansub with softsubs (so you can turn the subs off).

Yeah, but even thats a lot more difficult to find than hardsubbed stuff Sad Its annoying but I usually just put a ruler in front of the subs, or if I'm not playing full-screen I move the video below the screen so the subs don't show.

Hm, I could watch DB again. If I can find it without subs... and there's enough episodes to last me through the summer and more. However I've watched both of those shows so much, so I'm not sure.

Being a 17 year old male I don't think I could handle watching Sailor Moon every morning Wink I'll check out Prince of Tennis though -- I've heard of it but I've never checked it out.

type in kanji on google & you'l find it streamed without subs, i think 56.com
Ah, thank you. I'll have a look at it-- I've never heard of it before.

 When I had a CRT monitor I used to tape a bit of paper to the screen, can't do that any more though ;P

Here are some of the later episodes and they have Chinese subtitles and since you guys are probably not studying Chinese then I think they won't prove to be too distracting.

However I find I cant take my eyes off of them since I can read a decent fraction of them HANZIES!

Dragon Ball Kai is quite recent (remake of Dragon Ball Z but without the filler and in HD), so you could probably find all the raws so far on http://nyaatorrents.org

If you can't find raws, then there are usually loads on PD.

I watched the first episodes of DB Kai as I thought it would be a great way to view the series again unsubbed but I hated it too much to continue. Without the original musics it just feels so wrong :/

Ooh, I just thought of quite a good show.

Game Center CX. Basically this comedian plays snes / nes games (quite badly) and tries to finish them within a time limit (usually 24 hours). Really quite easy to understand, but really funny and entertaining =D

It's pretty hard to find torrents for it, but if you want, I could upload / torrent all the ones I've downloaded from PD.

Also, maybe One Piece?

What's PD?

Just watched a little of the show on youtube, looks pretty interesting. I might try to torrent it for just general viewing.

i like zettai kareshi better, but a more boyish anime version of the same type of idea is chobits. its also quite entertaining, and the first few episodes at least, are fairly easy.
It won't ruin your manhood to watch Zettai Kareshi. It's quite good, really. And the robotic speech by the main character is easy to follow. For a little more otokopoi feel, try 3 Peace. Lots of slang and fast dialog however.

I personally think 人志松本のすべらない話 is quite great, but I'm guessing it could be harder than what you're aiming for. It's basically famous Japanese comedians sitting together by a table. A guy throws a dice with their names on it. When someones name comes up, they have to tell a すべらない話, a story which will definitely make you laugh. They are also allowed to tell the same story several times since it's said that a story which will definitely make you laugh is fun every time you hear it. It's nice because it's just constant talking, there's humor and the stories are very varied. The problems is that there's a lot of kansaiben going on (since comedians often speak such) and there can be quite a bit of slang and such. They also speak quite fast.

For streaming, I always use tudou.com, but I've come to be aware that it's blocked in some countries (Japan, apparently). Their shows all have chinese subs, but I can't read them, so it's not an issue.

Ha, I'm not bothered about "ruining my manhood" -- I just thought Sailor Moon might be a bit much

I think that's a bit higher level than what I'm aiming for but I'll check it out anyway : ) Thank you!

Oh, is that what soft subs are? Just by the names I thought hard subs were a rough translation and soft subs were more refined.

Generally speaking, .avi = hard sub, .mkv = soft sub, with most new videos being released done in mkv.

Not really true, though it works for most purposes. .avi is a video format, .mkv is a container format. An .mkv usually contains a .avi or .mpeg video, then some form of audio. Sometimes, it contains several audiotracks and several subtitle tracks as well. For an .avi to have softsubs, those have to be supplied in a separate file. As we all know, that system is horrible, which is why it is quite uncommon. Instead, people hard"code" the sub into the actual video file. So the .avi doesn't actually contain subtitles, it just has text as part of some of the images.

The summary being that .mkvs can be hardsubbed as well, if the video file inside them is hardsubbed. Fortunately yes, newer groups with newer formats tend to use the awesome abilities of container formats. Anime is always best with dual audio and softsubs, just because it's nice to be able to choose what you want.

Actually .avi is also only a container format. As such, mkv do not contain them, but their contents can be pulled out and put into an avi container.

Well, regardless, .avi can only contain video and audio, not text. So an .avi can't ever be softsubbed by itself.

Hello! first time posting.

A couple months back, while browsing the internet, I found a tv course completely in Japanese. I haven't watched but a few episodes yet, but it seemed like a good way for a beginner to immerse themselves. It's called "Erin ga choosen - Nihongo Dekimasu", just Google it and you should find some free episodes. I'm not sure where you could buy it.

I'm not sure if this is Raw (Meaning without subtitles right?), I think part of it is and part of it isn't, at least what I remember.

I hope I was some help.
