So an .avi can't ever be softsubbed by itself.
I'd guess it's as likely that an .mkv is hard-subbed, as that an .avi that comes with subtitle files instead of encoded subs. For one, it saves a step for the subbers if they're working off raws, as it means a simple mux rather than a re-encode.
